One of the old guards and reliable players of TNT Tropang Giga has decided to hang up his jersey and move on from professional basketball.
PBA Veteran Harvey Carey has ended his stint in the flagship franchise of the Manny V. Pangilinan group, after 19 seasons.
In January 2020, the 6-foot-3 forward looked back on the day he got drafted in PBA in 2003.
He wrote on Instagram, “Jan. 12, 2003 was the day I was drafted 4th into the @pbaconnect by @tntkatropa.ph. 17 years later, I'm still here...still grinding...still doing what they said I couldn't. “
Meanwhile, in a statement released by TNT's team manager Gabby Cui, the whole team expressed their appreciation and described Harvey as a “great teammate.”
The statement reads, “We would like to thank Harvey for everything he has done for TNT Tropang GIGA. He has been a consummate leader, proven winner, great teammate and an excellent basketball player.
"For 19 years he has been the epitome of a true professional, We wish Harv well as he moves on with the new chapter in his life. Our doors will always be open,”
Meanwhile, several high-profile basketball stars took to social media to pay tribute to the incredible cager now that he is retired.
Former Ateneo de Manila University star cager Thirdy Ravena posted a throwback photo with Harvey Carey and recalled meeting him on his 7th birthday.
“I remember my parents asking me what my wish was for my 7th Birthday, and telling them the only thing I wanted was for you to show up to my party because you're my biggest idol.
“17 years later, you're still one of the people who I look up to the most. Lucky to have been able to practice and play with/against a true vet of the game! Learned a whole lot from you, and most of them through your actions. Can't look at this picture without thinking how time went by TOO fast!”
Here are some of the reactions of PBA athletes to Harvey's retirement.
Last year, there were other high-profile retirements in the PBA.
Meralco Bolts player Ranidel de Ocampo has also made a decision to stop playing professional basketball after 16 years.
Joining Ranidel was 'Scoring Apostle' Peter June Simon of the Magnolia Hotshots in September and Harvey's teammate Kelly Williams.
