NewJeans Cool With You music video

Here's why we love the two 'Cool With You' music videos so much.

A day before K-pop girl group NewJeans drop their mini album Get Up, the global rookie girl group gifted their Bunnies by pre-releasing two new music videos for their title track “Cool With You.”

“Cool With You” is a chill pop track that highlights Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, and Hyein's soothing and beguiling vocals. With this song, the girls did not need to bend and break themselves to cement their stance as one of the few rookies in the industry that can effortlessly sing.

The accompanying music video also proved their versatility as artists who are not only exemplary when it comes to singing, dancing, and performing. NewJeans, through their art, can tell stories and shape minds as well.

The side A music video, directed by Wooseok Shin, features “Cool With You” in the background and stars Jung Hoyeon and Micol Vela. It tells the story of a mythical woman (Hoyeon) who helps humans fall in love with each other. In the process, she falls in love with a human (Micol) who is not aware of her existence. By the end of the video, she bares her soul and faces the light.

The side B music video, still directed by Wooseok Shin, continues the story in side A but this time Hoyeon's character becomes human and finally gets to fall in love with the character of Micol, the man she longs for. The ending leaves on a sad note though, as another mythical creature (Tony Leung) gets in the way and had Micol's character fall in love with another human being.

There's a lot to unpack with these two music videos but let us start by first pointing out how amazing it was that the music video starred global superstars Jung Hoyeon and Tony Leung. Hoyeon is a model who's well-regarded for her role in the K-drama Squid Game.

While Tony Leung is a veteran in the industry having starred in Wong Kar Wai's films In The Mood For Love, Happy Together, and Chungking Express. He has also recently been featured in the Marvel film Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

Secondly, the two music videos paid homage to a few pop culture references, depending on your interpretation. It could have taken inspiration from the film City of Angels but is more on leaning to being a modern take on the tale of Psyche and Cupid.

A lot of fans had their own hot takes on the newly released music videos and we've compiled them here for your reference.

Oh, did we forget to tell you? The side B also gave Bunnies a glimpse of NewJeans' song “Get Up.” The mellow R&B track can effortlessly belong to Spotify's Chilled R&B playlist. It's that chill and laidback.

NewJeans will release their mini-album Get Up on July 21, 2023. As of writing, they have released tracks “New Jeans,” “Super Shy,” and “Cool With You.” The new album will include other tracks “ETA,” “Get Up,” and “ASAP.”
