Eighties teen star Sheryl Cruz is now a certified actress. Proof of this was her impeccable performance as Valeria, the antagonist in Bakekang. Now, her next challenge is to give justice to the love scorned Divina in GMA’s first sinenovela offering, Eddie Garcia’s “Sinasamba Kita.” Text by KC M. Abalos. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. Question: Who is Divina? Divina Ferrer…is what you would call a bida kontrabida. She is bitchy but not really bitchy in the beginning…Things became wired between her and her sister. Q: How bad is she? Siya yung nagwe-wear ng path since sa kanya sumusunod yung kapatid niya. When I did our first three scenes direk was telling me, ‘No, hindi ka dito salbahe. Mabait ka dito. Mabait ka sa kapatid mo.’ Q: So, why does she turn bad if she is essentially a good person? Nag-iisa lang siyang anak. It’s not because she is a spoiled brat but, she has to take all the bitterness of her father. Eventually she got to be really strict with everything. Divina eventually becomes protective, I guess, of what she has, lalo na yung love niya para kay kay Jerry (Wendell Ramos) na ayaw niyang may (sumira). Nung…nalaman niya na something’s going on between her sister and Jerry, I guess that is the real reason (she became bad). Q: Are you excited about working with Wendell Ramos? Yes, it’s a new scene na makikita ng tao. It’s nice na when you look at the pictures, when you start doing the scenes, the people you work with, nakikita mo yung chemistry, so excited ako. Q: Did you watch the old film? I saw the movie again. I know that I have seen it as a child and I’m very familiar with all the Rey Valera songs. I just wanted to see kung ano ba talaga yung buong plot ng pelikula just to refresh lang my mind. Q: How will the Sinenovela differ from the film? New perspective, more modern. (An) example is the character of my mom, played by Jackie Lou Blanco. Sylvia Ferrer is not in the original movie but…mas magkakaroon ng mas magandang explanation..since we are stretching this to one whole season and importante kasi na ipakita (king) bakit biglang sour ‘yung relationship between the two girls. Kasi mahal talaga niya yung kanyang kapatid niya. Q: What is the difference between Valeria and Divina? Malaki yung difference. Valeria is an actress and as an actress, she always reinvents herself. She gets different hair styles, depende sa mood niya and she really got those big bling blings. Dito naman, Divina is a business woman. She is more corporate. Walang mga wig. Walang mga extension. It’s my real hair that we are using. Ipapakita namin yung change na this is a very different character and it’s far from the role of Valeria na bitchy. Q: What would Sheryl Cruz bring to Sinasamba Kita? Alam ko maganda ‘yung pelikulang ito. I can never be an Ate Vi and there’s only one Ate Vi. I just want to be my own person and I would like to deliver my character as Divina in my own way with the help, of course, of the people around me especially Direk. He’s giving me a lot of confidence naman at suporta pati nga yung mga writers namin dito, top writers wala kaming masabi.
