Former Miss World Megan Young has taken to social media to apologize for what supporters of Miss World Botswana have perceived as a slight to their candidate in the international pageant.
In a post on her official Facebook page, Megan explained that she only wanted to offer a helping hand to Miss Botswana Lesego Chombo by fixing her hair onstage. However, she explained that she did not see the “bigger picture” that the action could have caused distress and that it was culturally unacceptable to Botswanans.
Megan then shared that she had already personally spoken to Miss Botswana Lesego Chombo and apologized to her in private, and then publicly apologized to the people who may have found the action uncomfortable or confusing.
Check out the full statement and apology below.
For her part, Miss Botswana Lesego Chombo called on her countrymen to be kinder to Megan and to eventual Miss World winner, Krystyna Pyszková of the Czech Republic.
Megan Young was one of the presenters in this year's Miss World pageant held last March 9 at the Jio World Convention Centre in Mumbai, India. Megan won the Miss World crown in 2013 and remains the only Filipina to bring the title to the country.
This year, the country was represented by Gwendolyne Fourniol, who performed well in several of the pageant's challenges. She was able to place in the Top 20 of the Top Model Challenge alongside delegates from Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Martinique, Peru, Botswana, Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa, Togo, Belgium, Czech Republic, France, Scotland, Slovakia, India, Indonesia, Lebanon, and Turkey.
Gwendolyne also placed in the Top 25 of the Miss World Head to Head Challenge. Eventually winning the Miss World Head to Head Challenge were the delegates from Nigeria, Zimbabwe, Lebanon, England, and Botswana.
