Celebrity couple Ice Seguerra and Liza Diño had a successful opening of their first stage play together, titled Choosing, last weekend at the Power Mac Center Spotlight, Blackbox Theater in Circuit Makati.
The LGTB-themed play relates the experiences of members of the LGBTQIA+ community through the relationship story of its main characters, Stella and Mitch.
At the end of the star-studded press preview on Saturday, June 29, Liza turned emotional after getting a standing ovation from the audience.
She told guests, “This is really a personal piece that does not represent our story but a lot of stories in our community. It's not easy to make this kind of play, especially if it's, you know, something unconventional.”
Liza also noted, “This is all of our 11 years of being together, in a piece that hopefully can inspire and can relate to people who are sharing the same experience as us.”
Choosing is the first play the actress wrote, under the supervision of their director, Anton Juan.
On her Instagram, Liza dedicated a post to her mentor and told her followers how the latter guided her in writing Choosing.
She said, “I don't think we would be able to bring this play to life without his support. His guidance, from the time we first discussed the project with him during holy week, allowed us to understand and reflect why we need to do this play. He kept on asking questions that provoked us into a lot of reflection about ourselves and our relationship. He challenged us to look deeper but never forced us to find answers.
“I guess that's the reason why this process was so freeing----because it was organic and spontaneous and writing the play became an exercise to vulnerability and rawness.
“Thank you Sir Anton. You have been a mentor to me since my college days in UP---From movement class to being part of your plays. But I think this is the first time we worked closely together and shared something really intimate and life-changing. Your generosity and selflessnes allowed us to create this piece that immortalizes our journey to choosing LOVE.
“Thank you for CHOOSING us for your comeback in Philippine theater. It's such an honor to experience your genius in action”
In connection to this, after the show, Juan thanked Liza and Ice for giving life to Stella and Mitch
He said, “I want to take this little moment to say thank you very much to our two artists here because they helped display asking ourselves questions 'til there's no more question to ask, and that was very good. I think that this laying of our vulnerabilities towards honesty to ourselves is very important to this day, where we're so filled with lies. Our state, our government, and our world are so filled with artificial news, lies, lies, lies. So, I'm very enthralled to come back once again for our country and I am bound to stay here.”
Watch Choosing onstage on July 6, with 3 and 8 p.m. shows; and July 7 at 2 p.m., 4:30 p.m., and 8 p.m. schedule.
