Here are a few ideas for those interested in exploring Masbate.

Although not a mainstream tourist destination, Masbate offers vast natural wonders and an exquisite culinary experience. Drew Arellano and his fellow biyaheros traveled to the southern part of Luzon to discover the underrated Ticao Island.

Here are a few ideas for those interested in exploring Masbate.

Biyahero tip #1: Try their localized puto

Different from the puto Manilleños are accustomed to, the Masbate version is made of cassava and bukayo or minatamis na niyog. Its chewy texture and sweet taste makes it a perfect coffee partner.

Biyahero tip #2: Stay in the Altamar Beach Resort

The Altamar family’s vacation house turned resort was constructed in 1998. With a library of books, comfortable bed rooms, and home-cooked meals, it’s easy to feel at ease in an island far away from home.
Full board and meals: 3500 PhP per head

Biyahero tip #3: Go diving in Manta Bowl

Divers from all over the world frequent the Manta Bowl, located between Sorsogon and Masbate. If in luck, you may find manta rays and whale sharks while exploring the underground paradise.

Biyahero tip #4: Go pasalubong shopping

Some of the many choices that tourists can bring home to their loved ones are woven products. These include fans made from anahaw leaves and plates made from nito or dried baging.
Prices start at 7 PhP

Biyahero tip #5: Enjoy the beach

Nothing beats lying on a hammock and enjoying the fresh breeze in the island.

How to get there:
There are different ways to get to San Jacinto, the jump-off point to the island. From Manila, one may commute by bus from Cubao or Pasay to Bulan, Sorsogon, then take a boat ride to San Jacinto. Also, biyaheros may take a plane from Manila to Legazpi or Masbate.

The ‘Biyahe Ni Drew’ team suggests a minimum of three days to discover Ticao.
