If you’re wondering how the production team came to decide on the costumes, this is your ticket to finding that out.
By now, you’ve already seen the out-of-this-world costume and make-up of GMA-7’s newest Telebabad, Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan. If you’re wondering how the production team came to decide on the costumes, this is your ticket to finding that out. Zaido is not the network’s first series that deals with intricate costumes, but it is the first one to need approval from a foreign company. But instead of becoming a problem, the production team behind the show considered it a challenge to come up with the best look for the cast. Challenge of Costumes “The costumes were taken from the original show,” costume designer Steve Salvador explains, adding that they were not allowed to deviate too much from what the original series, Shaider, showed. starsHe is one of those in charge of the costumes during shoots and decides on what the characters will wear in their scenes. But he credits the costume concepts to Bill Gustilo, another costume designer. Steve notes that the biggest challenge is meeting the expectations of the original series’ creator. “May reference kasi (to a previous show). If it were an original from the Philippines, we could get away with anything we want to do, you know? So we need to be a little more careful,” he explains. Aside from keeping the feel of the original series and making sure that the costumes don’t show wear and tear, another task is to ensure that the costumes are comfortable and durable. Steve says that the warm tropical weather makes it more difficult since the actors shouldn’t sweat through them. “Kasi if the actors sweat a lot, it would take a long time to dry (the costumes). I hope not,” he adds. “Hindi siya difficult,” Steve laughs. “It was fun to do. Kasi wala namang ganda if you just go here to work. Every day na may problemang bago, there’s always something to do. It always poses a challenge every taping. That’s the best part of the job, ‘di ba?” Making Up the Make-Up starsTo explain the concept for the cast’s make-up, Ian Mirandilla, the make-up artist lent by the production team of MariMar, says, “Tinatanong namin sa stylist namin... Basta sa lahat, tinatanong namin kung ano ‘yung concept para matugma ‘yung make-up.” Ara Guco, Zaido’s main make-up artist, shares that the make-up for the cast was hard to do. “Lalo na ‘yung face paint, lalo na kung pinagpapawisan sila.” He further notes that some of the characters are easier to do than others, but he shares that the eye areas are really the hardest to do. For the individual characters, the challenge had been Paolo Ballesteros. “Kasi lalaki. Kailangan mong takpan ‘yung kilay niya para lagyan ng kilay na pambabae. Tapos ‘yung mga Amasona siyempre. Isang oras siguro bawat isa. Pero siguro ngayon lang… pag masanay ka na, mabilis na siya,” Ian notes. “Pinakamabilis? Siyempre si Dennis [Trillo], si Marky [Cielo]... Mga lalaki. Powder lang talaga ‘yun.” Ara offers. -- Text by Jason John S. Lim. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. Join the action and adventure in Zaido: Pulis Pangkalawakan, weeknights after 24 Oras.
