“Feeling ko po lumulutang ako sa ere,” the petite star said when asked what it felt like to win
Pinoy Pop Superstar...
It’s been two years since Jonalyn Viray, the first Pinoy Pop Superstar, entered showbiz. “Feeling ko po lumulutang ako sa ere,” the petite star said when asked what it felt like to win. “Feeling ko, nakasakay ako sa clouds kasi parang di ko maipasa sa ulo ko na ako ‘yung tinawag. Parang gusto kong sabihin, ‘Paki-repeat nga po!’ Ganun ‘yung feeling, parang sobrang di ako makapaniwala!” Text by Yvette U. Tan. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. Since then, her life has been a whirlwind of performances, guest stints and tours, with very little time for rest. But Jonalyn isn’t complaining. Performing is a dream come true for her, and she wouldn’t trade it for the world!

“Mas busy ako ngayon,”
Jonalyn says. “Feeling ko, naging mas mature (ako) kasi natutunan ko ‘yung mga bagay na nasa paligid ko, tapos syempre, kumikita na ako sa sarili ko kaya kailangan ko matuto mag-ipon para sa future kasi hindi naman ako forever nasa show business. Madami din akong mga (bagong) experiences, na ma-meet na mga tao.” Aside from helping her mature into a wonderful young woman, being in showbiz has taught Jonalyn some hard lessons, not only in her craft, but also in life as well. “(I learned to) be careful kung sino ang pagkatiwalaan kasi syempre, ang show business, madaming nag pre-pretend; konti lang ang mga totoong tao,” she shares. “And syempre, ‘yung performance mo, hindi mo alam kung ‘yun na ‘yung last performance mo, so kailangan mo ibigay ‘yung best mo.” Though Jonalyn is known for her renditions of ballads, she hopes to be able to perform other musical genres in the future. “(Sana) lahat ng genre, ma-try ko,” she gushes. “Nandoon ‘yung pop, andoon yung rock, nandoon yung R&B, mga ballads, mga mabibilis, lahat na!”

Jonalyn’s own musical tastes are just as eclectic. “Mahilig po ako makinig sa mga alternative. Syempre... mga senti din,” she says. She favorite artists include, “Mariah Carey,
Regine Velasquez, Kelly Clarkson, Alicia Keys, and Michelle Branch.” Jonalyn’s career is flying high, but it doesn’t mean that she’s stopped dreaming. She’s got a lot of goals for herself and her loved ones. “Syempre, (I hope) to stay in this business as long as kaya ko pa,” she intimates. (I hope) maging stable ‘yung life ng family ko at saka makapagtapos ng pag-aral. I stopped, pero sana makatapos ako.” Jonalyn stopped school when she was in her senior year. “Plan ko po mag-take ng home study,” she shares. “Sana maasikaso ko na kasi sa ngayon, medyo busy pa ako.”

As a winner of a talent search, Jonalyn knows that she owes everything to her fans. “Maraming-maraming salamat sa inyong walang-pagsawang supporta,” she says. “Sana hindi po kayo magbago at sana hindi rin ako magbago.
