It's no surprise that All Star K! has lasted six long years. All that wild and wacky singing only leaves viewers hunkering for more!
This January, All Star K! celebrates its sixth year anniversary—that’s six straight years of non-stop fun and mayhem! Let’s ask the the multi-talented hosts, Allan K and the Queen of Soul, Jaya, what secrets they hold to the show’s success. Text by Alula Love M. Dela Cruz with interviews by Jessa Ericka Bien. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. Recipe for Success Six years on the air for a weekend show is definitely a milestone, and All Star K! has proven this to be true. With six years running, they still have no signs of stopping. “What made this show work is the blessing. We’re blessed to do this, we were meant to do this,” shares Jaya. There are also numerous factors that can be attributed to the show’s success, and the first lies in the Pinoy’s endless love affair with singing. “Filipinos love to sing. Every Filipino home has a karaoke system,” explains Allan K. Second, according to Jaya, it’s all about how down-to-earth celebrities can be: “Ang mga manonood kasi, since artista at mga singers yung mga nandiyan, gusto nila [makita na] tao ba ito at alam ba talaga niya lahat.” Finally, it’s the hosts themselves. Jaya says that doing All Star K! can not only be fun, but educational, too. With the show, she was able to learn how to do improvs. “I think this is where I get to learn to be sponataneous because we don’t have scripts for our dialogues,” Jaya says. She also adds that with this, she has learned to rely on her partner Allan K: “Tumitindi lalo yung aming rapport. He makes it easy for me.” Allan also believes that they’ve established a certain kind of bond which adds appeal to the show. “Kahit hindi na nga kami magtinginan, pakiramdaman lang. Kung minsan nagkakasabay na kami ng salita. If you can’t call [that] chemistry [what] else would it be?!” he laughs. With credible hosting comes integrity. And for this singing twosome, the most important thing a game show should posses is honesty. Jaya stands by this, saying that if the show is honest to its audience and crew, it would surely gain respect and loyalty from its patrons: “You have to be honest. Kasi pag nandaya, halata na yan and it would go all the way.” Fun and freedom With this very serious side of hosting a game show, you would think the crew of All Star K!comes to work in a solemn mood. But Jaya and Allan beg to disagree: “It’s the most fun job we’ve ever had!" Jaya adds, “I think this is the only venue for me to be like crazy, maging loka-loka.” Allan K shares the exact same sentiments: “Anything goes sa show na ‘to. Actually, except for the mechanics and lyrics, the rest come from us.” Aside of having the freedom to do almost anything, these two friends love being onstage when the cameras starts rolling. A sort of competition goes on between Allan K and Jaya when they’re on air—but it’s all for for fun, of course. “Patalbugan kami ng posing. Kasi minsan, mahirap i-overdo yung ginawa niya,” he says. With a fun and light environment on the set of this amazingly spontaneous show, we hope that All Star K! will have more years to come.
