Angie Mead King is making headlines for the past few days after a video of her announcing the closing of her hotel chains due to the coronavirus pandemic has circulated online.
But, according to Angie, the leaked video was only supposed to be disseminated to her staff.
Through her Instagram Story, the hotelier commented, “It's true that we have to close all my hotels due to COVID-19. The video I released was for my staff and not for the public.
“I don't want to comment any more on this story as it's very hard for me to talk about.”
Adding, “Right now, my main concern is to find work for my loyal staff who have been with me for decades.”
It was reported in several news sources on June 2nd that Angie has announced the closing of her Victoria Court branches in the country due to the impact of the virus in the hotel industry.
Angie, who shares ownership and management with her brother Atticus King, is the head of the southern branches of the hotel while her brother runs the northern branches.
In the video posted online, Angie said that their hotel chains will not be able to produce the “same results” as they used to.
She explained, “Even though we have been accepting OFWs, BPOs, and maritime crew, it is still not enough for the business to sustain itself and take care of all of us. We all have to go into survival mode. It is better for us to prepare for this now, rather than ignore it.”
Angie also added that she has started preparing for her employees' retirement and retrenchment packages so that they “will have some funds to survive over the next few months.”
“Please don't think that we have come to this decision lightly. It was of great difficulty,” she added.
“I want to let you know that we value all your hard work and loyalty that you have given during my management and I really wish there was another way to go about this.”
In a separate video, Atticus clarified that he won't be closing his branches due to the fact that he and Angie have different management groups.
Emphasizing, “I cannot speak on her behalf but my group is not closing, and instead we opted to do a deep retrenchment to try to keep the lights on until things revert back to normal.
“Thank you for all the concerns and inquiries. Stay safe. My team and I are looking forward to serving you guys when things revert back to normal.”
