The war-drama film Mindanao was selected to represent the Philippines in the prestigious 93rd Academy Awards, popularly known as the Oscars.

The Brillante Mendoza-directed film top-billed by Judy Ann Santos and Allen Dizon will compete in the International Feature Film category.

Film Academy of the Philippines director-general Vivian Velez announced the good news on Facebook on Tuesday, November 25.

“We are pleased to announce the selection of the feature film, 'Mindanao,' as the Philippines' official entry to the 93rd OSCARS International Feature Film category,” she wrote.

“Mindanao won Best Picture in the most recent Metro Manila Film Festival and featured Judy Ann Santos and Allen Dizon as the lead actors, directed by Brillante Mendoza.”

The movie was released in the Philippines in 2019 as part of the 45th Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF).

It won 11 awards in the festival including Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, and Best Picture.

Before the MMFF, Mindanao was screened in Korea, Japan, and Egypt, where it won Best Actress and the Henry Barakat Award for Best Artistic Contribution awards during the 41st Cairo International Film Festival.

Judy Ann, meanwhile, reacted to the film's Oscars' selection by writing on Instagram: “Sooo much to be grateful for. Congratulations team Mindanao.”
