Juno star and transgender actor Elliot Page shared that he knew he “wanted to be a boy” at the age of nine but had to “compromise” to pursue a career in acting.
He revealed this in his latest interview with TIME Magazine, his first since publicly coming out as transgender and non-binary back in December 2020.
According to the 34-year-old actor, he knew of his gender identity at a young age after cutting his hair short for the first time.
He even recalled, “I wanted to be a boy. I would ask my mom if I could be someday.”
However, months after cutting his hair, Elliot landed his first acting job in the Canadian TV movie Pit Pony, which required him to grow out his hair and act like a girl.
“I became a professional actor at the age of 10,” he said.
“Pursuing that passion came with a difficult compromise. Of course, I had to look a certain way.”
Despite this, his mother remained fully supportive of his decision to come out, adding, “She wants me to be who I am and supports me fully.
“It is a testament to how people really change,” Elliot said.
In the same interview, Elliot also opened up about his transformation and transition altogether.
He said he had already undergone top surgery to remove his breasts and that he was recovering from the procedure when he publicly came out as transgender.
The results, according to Elliot, have “completely transformed” his life and have helped him feel like his true self.
Furthermore, Elliot says that the trappings of fame that resulted in his meteoric rise to stardom-- after appearing in Juno, X-Men: Days of Future Past, and Inception--led him to experience serious mental issues.
“I just never recognized myself,” he said.
“For a long time, I could not even look at a photo of myself.
“I didn't know how to explain to people that even though I was an actor, just putting on a T-shirt that was cut for a woman would make me so unwell.”
Elliot also told TIME that his transition and non-binary identity is a “complicated journey and an ongoing process.”
He cited that he often referred to himself as a “transgender guy” though GLAAAD had advised him that he not be called a “man” but as a “transgender person.”
Today, the actor is currently filming the third installment of the hit Netflix series The Umbrella Academy, in which he stars as queer cisgender female Vanya Hargreaves.
