Moulin Rouge: The Musical and The Inheritance took the top honors at this year's Tony Awards, which honored productions from Broadway's 2019 and 2020 season.
This year's Tony's awarded productions from 2019 and 2020 because the global coronavirus pandemic shut down the award show and Broadway itself for more than a year.
Based on the 2001 movie starring Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman, Moulin Rouge: The Musical took home 10 awards, including Best Musical and Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in Musical for Aaron Tveit.
In his emotional acceptance speech, Aaron Tveit declared that it was a privilege to perform on Broadway and that what they do changes people's lives and minds.
The Inheritance, which chronicles gay life in the 20th century, won Best Play and two other awards including Best Actor for Andrew Burnap.
Andrew Burnap was also equally emotional delivering his acceptance speech, encouraging aspiring actors to pursue their dreams by quoting Martha Graham's letter to fellow dancer and choreographer Agnes de Mille.
Performances from the shows Jagged Litle Pill, Ain't Too Proud, and American Utopia were also staged. A standout production during the four-hour award show was Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth, the original stars of Wicked, performing "Something Good."
