
Olivia Rodrigo is the first Filipina and second youngest artist to land top Grammy nominations for her debut album Sour and chart-topping single “Driver's License” for Album of the Year, Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist. The 18-year-old breakout artist also landed nods for Best Pop Vocals Album, Best Pop Solo Performance, and Best Music Video.
On Instagram, the “traitor” singer posted in celebration of this career milestone, saying, “Many dreams have come true for me this year but this one is probably the most meaningful. Thank you to everyone who has believed in me and supported the songs I write.”
Fellow Filipina singer-songwriter H.E.R. earned eight nominations, namely, Album of the Year, Best R&B album, Song of the Year, Best R&B Song, Best Song Written for Visual Media, Best Contemporary Christian Music Performance/Song, Best R&B Performance, and Best Traditional R&B Performance.
At the 2021 Grammy Awards, the songwriters of H.E.R.'s “I Can't Breathe” took home the win for Song of the Year. The moving tune delivered a message in solidarity of the Black Lives Matter protests in the United States.
Making her debut at the Grammy Awards, Filipino-American rapper Saweetie earned her first two Grammy nominations for Best New Artist and Best Rap Song for “Best Friend,” her collaboration track with fellow Grammy nominee Doja Cat.
Jazz musician Jon Batiste led the Grammy nominations with 11 nods, followed by Justin Bieber, Doja Cat, and H.E.R. with eight each.
This year, the Grammys introduced two new categories: Música Urbana Album and Global Music Performance. These were among the several changes implemented by the Recording Academy in recent months, including the elimination of the secret committee nomination for several of its categories.
