If you thought the Oscars this year will be the same as any other year, it isn't. And that's because Will Smith and Chris Rock had a shocking onstage dispute at the famous awarding ceremony. The names of "Will Smith" and "Jada" even trended on Twitter after what happened.
Will Smith stunned everyone - from famous celebrities to audiences watching the Oscars from the confines of their home - when he, all of a sudden, went on stage and struck Chris Rock on the face after making a "joke" about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, and her hair loss.
The comedian and famous actor from Grown Ups referred to Jada and said, “Jada, I love you. G.I. Jane 2, can't wait to see it.”
In case you didn't know, G.I. Jane is a 1997 film starring Demi Moore which shows her as the first woman to undergo Navy Seal training. In the film, Demi Moore shaves her head and goes bald to become what the title of the film suggests, "G.I. Jane,” stripping off her femininity and showing all the men she beat that she deserves her position.
Now, you might be asking how this connects to the Smith family and why there was a sudden outrage from Will Smith's end.
This is because Jade Pinkett Smith is currently styling a bald look due to alopecia. Alopecia, as described by the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases, is, “a disease that happens when the immune system attacks hair follicles and causes hair loss.”
Jada Pinkett Smith, wife of the Oscar best actor winner Will Smith, has been open about her journey with alopecia since 2018. And last December 2021, she even posted a video of her with her bald look along with the caption, “Mama's gonna have to take it down to the scalp so nobody thinks she got brain surgery or something. Me and this alopecia are going to be friends … period!”
What happened during the 2022 Oscars between Will Smith and Chris Rock sparked a lot of mixed reactions on social media. Even celebrities had a say.
Jaden Smith, son of Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith tweeted, “And That's How We Do It.”
Tiffany Haddish, American comedian known for her role in the series Girls Trip, told the Los Angeles Times, “I think Chris was messy. As a woman who had a husb (husband), I wish my husb would have stood up for me the way (Will) stood up for (Jada). That's what every woman wants, right? She was hurt. And he protected his wife. And that's what a man is supposed to do.”
Even Cardi B, famous rapper of "Bodak Yellow," tweeted, “At your highest moment …be careful that's when the devil tries to come for you.”
Conan O'Brien, comedian and famous host of late night talk shows, made a joke and tweeted, “Just saw the Will Smith slap. Anyone have a late night show I can borrow just for tomorrow?”
Trevor Noah, comedian and host of The Daily Show, became very relatable when he said, “Wtaf????? That wasn't scripted????? (shocked face emojis)”
Journalist and former First Lady of California, Maria Shriver, on the other hand, tweeted, “#WillSmith says he wants to be a vessel for love. Love is not violent. Love is not what was displayed on a global stage tonight. #Oscars.” She further said, "We should never get to a place where we sit and watch a movie star hit someone on global television then, moments later, get a standing ovation while talking about love.”
Sophia Bush, famous actress from One Tree Hill and Chicago P.D., spoke facts when she tweeted, “Violence isn't ok. Assault is never the answer. Also? This is the 2nd time that Chris has made fun of Jada on the #Oscars stage, [and] tonight he went after her alopecia. Punching down at someone's auto-immune disease is wrong. Doing so on purpose is cruel. They both need a breather.” She even further helped educate Jada Pinkett Smith's current situation posting a link to the thread of her tweet.
