Canada-based singer Niya gave viewers a glimpse into her musical journey during her appearance on Playlist Live's The Drop, where she sat down with producer Ruth Usualio for a Q&A and performance.
Niya performed her song “Siya Na,” which she described as a track centered on women's empowerment.
During the session, the singer also talked about how she developed her passion for music. Niya said she began writing songs at 17, after moving to Toronto, Canada.
She was born and raised in Tuguegarao City, Cagayan Valley, until she was 16.
Beyond songwriting, Niya said she has always enjoyed writing in different forms.
“I really like writing in general, not just poems. I like writing paragraphs and essays,” she shared.
When asked about her songwriting process, Niya said she draws inspiration from her emotions.
“I always write based on what I feel. Even with my poems, my songwriting is also similar. I write mostly when I'm sad,” she said.
Her Filipino upbringing also plays a major role in her music. Niya recalled growing up in a Filipino household where karaoke was a big part of family life.
“I did a lot of karaoke when I was a child. My inspiration is my family. Music is an essential part of my family,” she said.
For her dream collaboration, Niya named P-pop girl group BINI, admitting that working with the group would be a dream come true for her as an independent artist.
“As a small artist, this is too far-fetched, but BINI. I really want to make music with them,” she said.
Niya also revealed some of the songs currently on her playlist, including Ben&Ben's “Leaves,” ABBA's “Dancing Queen,” and songs by Taylor Swift.
The Drop features rising Filipino artists and bands and airs every Friday at 1 p.m. on Playlist Live. Fans can follow GMA Playlist on Facebook, TikTok, and YouTube (@GMAPlaylist) for more interviews and updates on Original Pilipino Music.
