You can make your very own delicious Ilocos Empanada right at home with this easy recipe!

If you've ever traveled way up North then you might have already tasted the savory snack that is Ilocos Empanada.

By history, the empanada is actually of Spanish and Mexican origin. Empanada is a typical snack originating from Spain that is made with wheat flour and stuffed with meat, carrots, and corn - depending on the area.

But the finest of them all is the Ilocos empanada, the iconic orange crunchy outer shell combined with the longganisa, vegetables, and egg. With its interesting flavor and texture, small wonder Ilocos Empanada is being dubbed as one of the best snacks in the country.

So if you're wondering how to create one at home, here's a recipe for you:

Classic Ilocos Empanada

Ingredients for empanada dough:

½ Rice Flour

¾ Water

1 tbsp atsuete oil

Orange Food Color

Ingredients for filling:

Ilocos Longganisa

Green Papaya

Eggs

Bagnet Bits

Cooked Munggo

Beans

Procedure for empanada dough:

1. Mix ingredients in a bowl and knead dough lightly.

2. Take about a 1/8 cup of dough and flatten with rolling pin in between plastic wraps or wax paper.

3. Set aside while you make your filling. Before you make your filling, preheat your deep fryer by adding the cooking oil and set aside.

Procedure for filling:

1. In a small pan with a bit of olive oil, cook the chorizo and add the grated papaya until it has softened a little. Let cool.

2. Spoon out 1 tablespoon of filling to flattened dough and crack a quail in the middle egg. Seal the sides and deep fry in the preheated deep fryer.

3. Place Empanadas in a plate topped with plenty of paper towels to blot oil.

4. Serve in another clean platter and with garlic vinegar on the side.
