Singer-songwriter Noel Bernaldo performed his original single, “Hinulog Lang,” on Spotlight Music Sessions on Friday, December 29, 2023.

In an interview with GMANetwork.com, Noel shared that he first wrote the song in 2019 during the holidays, just before the new year. He also revealed that he wrote it to promote taking care of the environment.

“Naiinis kasi ako sa mga kalat na nakikita ko,” he explained.

According to Noel, what pushed him to write the song was the many discarded receipts that usually littered ATM booths or the area near the machines.

“Sabi ko, 'ako ay merong papel na napulot sa daan, hinulog lang, hinulog lang ng mamang dumaan, binasa ko, ATM receipt,' 'yun na 'yun, dere-deretso na 'yun. 'Yun 'yung pinaka-inspiration ko,” he said.

Noel also shared where he gets inspiration for his music and he admitted that when he was young, he mostly wrote love songs.

“Ngayon, may mga love stories pa rin naman, but more on may social relevance na. So 'yung nasa kapaligiran natin, usually, 'yun na 'yung madalas kong inspirasyon,” he said.

He also added that if he does not have a topic to inspire his songwriting, he usually watches documentaries to get some.

“Sa songwriting lang siguro, 'yung tamang time. May tamang time kasi and then 'yung mood sa pagsusulat. But eventually, 'yung inspiration, napakarami naman diyaan kung gugustuhin natin magsulat,” he said.

Aside from being a musician, Noel is also a teacher and when asked what would he teach his students, he replied, “More on discipline atsaka character.”

He explained, “Kapag sinabi nating discipline, kailangan bilang isang tao, 'yung disiplina mo kung ano 'yung oras na dapat na susulat ka at hindi. Siyempre character din ang pagsusulat e, songwriting character, so maganda rin 'yung transfer sa mga bata 'yung character as a musician.”
