Recently, Tokyo 2020 Olympic gold medalist Hidilyn Diaz made headlines again regarding the lifetime fuel incentive she received following her historic win. The athlete's name trended as netizens expressed envy over the perk, especially amid the continuous rise in gasoline prices.
In response to the resurfaced news, Hidilyn's manager, Noel Ferrer, shared his thoughts. He recently reacted to a post about the lifetime fuel incentive, which claimed that Hidilyn is supposedly the luckiest person today.
“PARANG DRAWING NAMAN PO ANG LIFETIME …,” Noel wrote in the caption.
Noel shared another post, this time addressing what he described as a “drawing,” or an unfulfilled promise, to the athlete.
He noted that the lifetime fuel supply for Hidilyn, along with several responses to national issues, seemingly share the same fate of remaining unfulfilled or failing to materialize.
“LIFETIME FUEL SUPPLY SA 1st FILIPINO OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALIST. PAGPAPABALIK SA PINAS KINA ZALDY CO at HARRY ROQUE ; AT SA SENADO KAY BATO, PAGPAPANAGOT NG COMELEC SA CAMPAIGN DONATIONS, PAGPAPAKULONG NG BIG FISH sa FLOOD CONTROL SCANDAL. PURO DRAWING!!!
On Thursday, March 12, Noel released a statement addressing the ongoing issue. According to him, the lifetime fuel incentive granted to Hidilyn for her victory was not mere hearsay. It was made public and, as Noel emphasized, carried no conditions, presented purely as an incentive.
“Phoenix Petroleum made the promise public in 2021 when Hidilyn won the country's first ever Gold Medal in the Olympics. The lifetime fuel incentive was their announcement, their commitment-not hearsay. In the artcard/ press release, there were no conditions whatsoever; it was presented purely as an incentive,” Noel wrote in his statement.
He further stated that as this incentive resurfaces on social media, Hidilyn informed him that she only received free fuel for the first two years following her victory.
He also emphasized that the support was not for a lifetime, adding that he was unsure whose “lifetime” was actually being considered.
“Netizens resurfaced it recently. Hidilyn told me that she received fuel support for the first two years after her win. Thanks, but to be accurate, it wasn't for a lifetime. I'm not sure whose lifetime the people had in mind,” Noel said.
Noel also reminded the public that commitments to athletes should outlast a viral moment. He urged for a deeper, more consistent level of respect and support for the country's top athletes.
“Sana matuto tayong bigyan ng importansya hindi lang ang mga salita at pangakong binitiwan, kundi ang pagpapahalaga sa mga atletang naghatid ng karangalan sa bansa,” Noel expressed.
Moving past the immediate issue, he expressed sadness over how people tend to overlook those who brought honor to the country once their names subside.
“Sadly, this is also symptomatic of how we regard athletes who are no longer in the limelight-even when they continue to contribute to sports and to the country. May these tough times bring out the best in us-and the honesty to match public pronouncements,” said Noel.
Noel concluded his statement with a hopeful hashtag: “#WorldPeace.”
Athlete Hidilyn Diaz has yet to issue a statement regarding these matters.
