After thirteen years in the business, Dino Guevarra is still showcasing his skills as a talented actor and bankable star.
After being in the industry for more than a decade, what are Dino Guevarra’s thoughts on his past, his current projects, and his life beyond the limelight? Here’s the scoop. Text by Jillian Q. Gatcheco. Photos by Jason S. Lim. Playing Antonio stars We know him these days as Antonio on MariMar, Sergio’s (Dingdong Dantes) best buddy who stays loyal no matter what. Dino reveals that the role was supposed to be short-lived (“Hanggang doon lang sa Kim Chan storyline”), but it was suddenly extended, which he is very grateful for. “Of course my character is so much fun, kasi I’m a friend of Sergio, [so] hanggang ending, kasali ako! Yun yung importante doon e, hindi ka mawawala,” he says. He adds, “Noong una, nagaalanganin silang kunin ako. Naghanap sila ng tamang role [for me] hanggang sa yun nga, pumasok yung Antonio.” His support role is made more colorful by another character in the plot: Arturo, played by Marky Lopez. “Iba siya, magaling [yung] nagagawa ni Marky!” Dino comments, referring to Marky’s effective gay portrayal. For Dino, working with Dingdong is a cinch, especially since the two have known each other since their dancing days [Dingdong and Dino were part of the popular dance group Abztract Dancers before getting into acting]. When asked how it feels to be part of a top-rating show, Dino imparts, “Sa awa ng Diyos, lahat ng nakasali akong show, number 1! Naks! From Bahay Mo Ba ‘To (2004-2006), Captain Barbell (2006), Now and Forever: Tinig (2006), Mahawi Man Ang Ulap (2007), tapos ito. Actually, lahat naman ng shows ng GMA [maganda].” stars Staying power With the projects that he’s receiving these days, we asked him if his stint in the reality show 30 Days paid off. The 2004 show had the purpose of reviving the careers of celebrities [and determining who deserves it most], and it was Dino who won the competition. “Actually, naudlot nga yun e, he replies frankly. “Kasi after 30 Days, maraming projects na nakaabang. Naudlot kasi naghiwalay kami ni Kim [Delos Santos, his former wife]. Lima yung shows ko noon, tapos naging isa na lang, yung Bahay Mo Ba ‘To. He says that what’s important is you have a steady job. “I’ve been in the business for 13 years, nauna pa ako kina Dingdong (Dantes). Halos kasabay ko yang sina Marvin (Agustin), sina Diether (Ocampo). What made him last for 13 years? “Ang importante dito, dapat people-person ka. Kailangan marunong kang makisama. You gain [people’s] respect.” Does he have any plans of dancing for good again, like in the old days? Kasi kahit papaano, si Michael Jordan [for example], nag-break [from basketball]. “So ako, parang ganoon,” he continues. Haha! Frustrated singer ako. Bad trip!” he jokes. But Dino says on second thought that he’s content with being able to act and dance, since what’s really important is having a back-up – something which he already has. His businesses stars He owns two branches of Bambi Fuentes salon [“May isa sa Visayas Ave., may isa sa BF Homes sa Aguirre”], and his girlfriend is the one in charge of the stores’ operations. Aside from these two, he has a bar, Kalye 215, also located in BF Homes. “Tapos nagba-buy and sell ako ng kotse,” he adds. “So pag walang taping, nandoon ako sa bar, kasi yung bar pang-gabi e. Aside from work, what is Dino busy with? “I play computers; sobra akong addict sa DOTA (Defense of the Ancients)!” Dino’s username is Obi Wan Kenobi, a character from the George Lucas hit flick Star Wars. Is he a Star Wars fan? “Medyo, pero hindi naman to the point na lahat ng pelikula ng Star Wars panonoorin ko. Pero I like [it]. Basta importante, manalo yung team! So five vs. five, etc. Parang basketball – syempre may MVP, kaya nananalo kayo.” He fesses up that he can really play games for hours, but says defensively that he’s not a geek! Don’t miss Dino in MariMar every weeknight right after Kamandag! You can also talk about him in the iGMA Forum . Get in touch with Dino!
