What nearly made Robin back out of “Joaquin Bordado?” Our tattooed action hero has a few confessions up his sleeve.
What nearly made Robin back out of “Joaquin Bordado?” What does he consider “baduy,” and what did he tone down to 20%? Our tattooed action hero has a few confessions up his sleeve. Text by Jillian Q. Gatcheco. With interviews by Jason S. Lim. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio.
Minus 80%

We know the drill. Almost every girl
Robin Padilla gets paired with onscreen becomes linked to him in real life. We couldn’t blame him, though; even
we are smitten by the ever
maginoo Binoe.
His co-star
Iza Calzado also agrees that Robin treats
all women in a special way, saying that he’s very “maalaga” and “maasikaso.” But Robin made a resolution the last time we talked to him on the set of
If you will remember, Robin had quite a controversy involving his
Asian Treasures co-star
Diana Zubiri. The entertainment headlines buzzed of how he wooed her during the cast’s finale taping in China. As usual, nothing was clarified until the noise eventually ceased. But it had enough of an effect on Robin for him to say, “Hindi na kagaya noong dati, ‘tol. Siguro ang nabawas mga 80%. Huli na yung [kay Diana]. Yun yung huling pinakamatindi! Naguluhan ako doon!”
Isang alitaptap
But even if Robin has toned down his gentlemanly ways, it cannot be denied that it has already been ingrained in his system, as shown in the way he gives praises to his leading lady in his primetime show.
Who says these things?! Only Robin does, and only
he can get away with it!
Projects for 2008
“Ipapasa ko muna po ang Muay kasi may gagawin akong pelikula [tungkol sa] Arnis,” says Robin, who’s the chairman of the Muay Thai Association of the Philippines. “May conflict, e.
Robin will also be paired with Ai-Ai Delas Alas for another movie project. Baliw po ako!” he jokes.
And of course, he’ll have a flick with GMA Films, where he’ll be paired with Sharon Cuneta.
Right now, Robin prefers to focus on his Arnis movie.
Where’s the challenge?
“Iba kasi yung gusto ni direk Mac Alejandre (
MariMar,
Kung Mahawi Man Ang Ulap),” says Robin of the type of martial arts they’ll be using for the show. “Medieval times ito. Doon nabuhay ang orihinal na Joaquin. Kaya mga fight scene niya, iba. Hindi siya martial arts -- warrior ito. Hindi po tayo makakagawa ng Asian style.”
He says that he always studies a stunt before actually doing it. At kailangan lang lagi, presence of mind.
When asked if he has a stunt double, he remarked, “Baduy! Stand-in lang yun.
Does he ever get scared?
“Nandoon yung takot,” he admits. “Pero wag kang magpakain sa takot mo. Kasi makakabitiw ka doon. Pag nakabitiw ka, yun na!”
Robin as a dad
One facet of Robin’s life that many are not privy to is his being a father – quite a proud one, at that. He says he’s giving all-out support to his two daughters Kylie and Queenie in their decision to enter show business. “Kaya lang, ayoko noong mga ligaw-ligawan!” he shares. “Hindi ako full-support doon! Kasi Muslim kami, e. Iba ang kultura. At dapat nilang panghawakan yun.
His 14-year old daughter Kylie is his co-star in
Joaquin, where she plays the warrior girl Erenea. “Naku, yun ang abangan ng ating kabataan,” says Robin, adding that his daughter is not a “fake.”
Robin reveals that Kylie doesn’t want to use their last name, Padilla. “Yun yung kabilin-bilinan niya – ‘Please, walang Padilla!’ Ang sinasabi niya, hindi pa daw niya nae-earn yung right.”
His eldest daughter Queenie is 16 years old and is an actress in another Network.
If there’s an offer for him to do an action movie with his kids, will he take it?
He says of his daughters, “Pag may leading man dapat handa! Biglang manghahamon! Yung mga pinsan nilang lalaki, pag masyadong maporma, [nagyayaya ng] ‘Just one round!’ Pag medyo presko yung leading man baka umuwi nang [bugbugan]!”
Tattoos=patience!
When you see Robin in
Joaquin, you might assume that the only tattoos on his body are the ones used for the show, but he says that he, too, has a lot of body art aside from what is allowed to be seen onscreen. Binubura [lang] nila yun,” he says. The artist uses henna over Robin’s existing tattoos to give the appearance of a clean slate.
He clarifies with a laugh, “Pero wala po akong tatong bilibid, ha!
What are his tattoos about?

Walo [silang lahat],” he imparts, counting them off one by one.
The only thing he complains about the role is the time needed to retouch all the henna tattoos on his body.
For the cinema ad, the artist used a marker pen instead of the henna ink, but they decided to use henna for the rest of the tapings because it doesn’t rub off as easily. Yung retouch, dalawang oras bawat take! E di syempre, adrenalin mo, bababa! Itataas mo na naman! Aba, nakakainit ng ulo! Muntik na ako mag-back out nang dahil sa tattoo! Hindi ko kaya nang ganoon!”
It’s a good thing that Robin is a man of discipline. Otherwise, who would be our Joaquin?
