Big names from the OPM scene are coming together - albeit still virtually - to celebrate the first successful month of the community pantries as well as to raise funds and further awareness about this phenomenon that sparked the bayanihan spirit in the country amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
The concept of installing a community pantry began in Maginhawa Street in Diliman, Quezon City on April 14, 2021.
Its brainchild Ana Patricia Non, also fondly called Patreng, set up a bamboo cart containing grocery items by the sidewalk. People were free to take whatever they need as well as donate whatever they can, operating under the catchphrase, “Magbigay ayon sa kakayahan, kumuha batay sa pangangailangan.”
Patreng's little gesture multiplied and inspired the birth of more community-led distribution and donation sites across the country. Community pantries began sprouting in different areas of the city, in remote areas in the province, and even as far as Timor-Leste. And by May 2021, the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) has tallied more than 6,700 community pantries organized in different parts of the Philippines.
While community pantries have generally gained positive feedback and support, some people question the sustainability and longevity of this effort.
The good news is, the community pantries have already reached their first month of operation, and more volunteers are chipping in to keep it going.
Community Pantry PH is hosting an online benefit concert titled “Para sa Masa” on Saturday, May 15, and the fund-raiser will be headlined by some of the best acts in Pinoy music.
Among the artists joining the celebration are The Itchyworms, Zild Benitez, Nonie and Shamain Buencamino, Frenchie Dy, Bayang Barrios, Johnoy Danao, and Datu's Tribe.
“Para sa Masa” will stream on the Facebook page of Community Pantry PH tomorrow at 7 P.M.
