Captain von Trapp played by Christopher Plummer

Thank you for the music, Captain von Trapp!

February is off to a sad start after news broke out that legendary actor and Oscar-winning Hollywood star Christopher Plummer has died at age 91.

Christopher shot to stardom via his role in the hit musical The Sound of Music in 1965, wherein he acted alongside another Hollywood gem Julie Andrews. He played the title role of Captain von Trapp in the film.

According to a statement of Christopher's long-time friend and manager Lou Pitt, which GMA News Online reported, he described the late Canadian actor as a “national treasure.”

"Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self-deprecating humor and the music of words,"

"He was a National Treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come. He will forever be with us."

In an article on People.com, it reported that Plummer was born to a prominent family in Toronto.

He then gave up a career as a concert pianist to join theater. He showcased his talents in several notable Shakespearian productions before getting the part in the 1965 movie that made him worldwide name -- The Sound of Music.

One of the highlights in Christopher Plummer's career happened in 2012, when he became the oldest actor, aged 82 then, to win an Oscar trophy. He bagged the award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in Beginners.

During the awarding ceremony, Christopher said these words when he accepted his golden statue, "You're only two years older than me, darling,"

"Where have you been all my life?"
