Visionary director Mark Reyes finally develops and directs the coolest movie to air in MMFF history.
In homage to classic sci-fi flicks such as, The Matrix, Stars Wars and Star Trek, visionary director Mark Reyes finally develops and directs the coolest movie to air in MMFF (Metro Manila Film Fest) history.
Director extraordinaire, Mark Reyes returns to the big screen with
Resiklo. After directing the latest Tiyanak movie under regal films, Direk Mark tries on the science fiction genre. For this established director, this new project is one of his most important movies to date, “As a Sci-fi buff, it’s a homage to
Star Wars and
Star Trek. And this probably my only chance to do it in the big screen, so I did it.”

Direk Mark reveals that the concept of
Resiklo, came to him some time after he directed the fantasy based series
Atlantika. “After Atlantika, an idea ran through my head and it was Resiklo.”
The concept was simple: how can a third world country survive after an alien invasion? “There’s been like a doomsday scenario in other Hollywood films, but that’s America! Knowing the day to day life of the Filipinos, our dilemma and politics, how can [Pinoys] survive?” says Direk Mark during an interview on location, in one his new movies due next year.
Aside from this unique concept, Direk Mike also added some mechanical elements to make the film more jaw-dropping, “The idea of if you’re going to fight with aliens, what kind of machines will they use to fight them off? That’s when I though of recycle materials for robots.” Hence the title
Resiklo came to mind.
He also stresses that this idea came to him way before he heard that there was going to be a
Transformers movie in the works. “I have documents to prove it, Transformers the movie was mentioned to me right after I thought of this,” laughs Direk Mark.

It may sound very American, but it’s actually very Pinoy, “There’s a Filipino flavor to it, the sense of humor is not lost in translation. The main focus is the characters, because it was originally written for a soap so ang daming elemento ng drama.”
So is the common Filipino ready for a localized alien extravaganza? “Like Zaido, Atlantika and Capt. Barbell, they get it. So I don’t have any fears about that.” For Direk Mark, it’s all about giving the best this Christmas season, “What I want is the excitement, the bigness of it this Christmas. [Every] Christmas kasi, everybody wants to be a kid.”
Direk Mark Reyes isn’t only an exemplary director, his also a risk taker. We can all count on that
Resiklo will be the beginning of a new genre in Philippine Cinema and Direk Mark will soon be this country’s next big Sci-fi director. -- Text by Alula Love M. Dela Cruz. Photos by Mitch Mauricio and Ignite films.
