When Pinoy boy band SUD released their music video for Sila in November 2015, they didn’t expect it would hit 3.5 million views a year hence.
“Nakakagulat. Hindi namin in-expect na millions 'yung makakanood. So kahit ngayon, nagugulat pa rin kami,” vocalist and guitarist Sud Ballecer said.
The group, formed in 2011, appreciates the interest of the public in the video’s storyline and the sustained appreciation for the song.
“Before we recorded it, it kind of had a cult following [already] ‘cause we were playing it live… [We appreciate it na] parang they were waiting for it [and] hanggang ngayon, marami pa ring nagtatanong kung ano nangyari sa ending ng video,” saxophonist Caloy dela Fuente added.
For Sud, one of the reasons their music strikes a chord with people is because of the mixture of each member’s influences.
“Before kasi, medyo alternative, medyo mabigat pa 'yung sound namin. Tapos nung pumasok 'yung new members, dala nila 'yung sarili nilang influences and 'yung tina-try namin is 'yung mga influences namin, pinapasok namin sa sound,” he shared.
The members of the five-piece band are unified by their love for music and are set apart from each other by their influences.
“Ngayon, si Caloy, 'yung sax player namin, nagpapasok na ng licks na jazzy. Kami naman ni Jimbo [Cuenco], 'yung drummer, sobrang hiphop heads kami and si Marc [Reyes], our bassist, funky, and si Kohl [Aguilar], our keyboardist, pop 'yung gusto niya. Kapag nag-ja-jam kami, sobrang lumalabas 'yung mga influences namin so 'yung mga songs namin right now, 'yun 'yung kinakalabasan,” he said.
Sud and Caloy are set to perform two of their songs on the Playlist tomorrow.
