In the city of Makati lies one of Indonesia's most popular and beloved restaurant, hailed for their famous Beef Rendang and Nasi Goreng.
Restoran Garuda is the first Indonesian restaurant chain franchise to come to the Philippines. They established the restaurant in the year 1976.
However, the more than 40-year-old chain temporarily closed its doors to prevent the spread of the coronavirus. It temporarily resumed its delivery operations in May and fully-opened its services about a month later.
Located on Salcedo Street in Makati, Restoran Garuda is known for its fine Indonesian cuisine and its certified Halal food that is perfect for our Muslim brothers and sisters and foreigners who'd prefer the option.
In an episode of Pop Talk, host Tonipet Gaba, comedienne Valeen Montenegro, and Chef Myke Tatung weigh in on the restaurant's most popular dishes, and here's what they have to say:
1. Nasi Goreng Jawa Ayam (Indonesian Chicken Fried Rice) - ★★★
P250 (Good for one to two persons)
Tonipet Gaba says, “It's Indonesian-style fried rice with their traditional combination of flavors. May spiciness level din sila from mild to spicy.”
Chef Tatung adds, “Very pretty rin 'yung bowl nila ng rice. Naka-arrange pa siya when it arrived.”
2. Sate Chicken (Indonesian Chicken Barbeque) - ★★★★★
P225 (Good for two to three persons)
Tonipet shares, “Ngayon lang ako naka-encounter ng very fragrant meal na may peanut sauce. They come in fun-sized portion pero maraming skewers kaya sulit. They're very tender, which I like, and it's well-seasoned. And 'yung sauce may chunky texture.”
3. Beef Rendang (Indonesian Spicy Beef Stew)- ★★★★★
P360 (Good for two to three persons)
Tonipet explains, “Ito ang Garuda signature dish na beef simmered [in] coconut milk and traditional Indonesian spices. It is cooked for hours para mag-melt 'yung flavors at puwede rin i-control ang anghang.”
Cher Tatung adds, “For me, kahit mild, it's way too spicy. Wala na nga akong dinagdag na sambal [chili sauce], pero talagang maanghang na maanghang siya. Pero, what I like about it is that it's Halal, and there are a lot of non-Halal restaurants in the Philippines. A lot of tourists look for Halal nowadays, so this is a good option for a restaurant.”
