Tips for starting your own podcast

Ever thought of starting your own podcast where you can share your thoughts and opinion about your favorite topics? Follow these beginner tips and learn how to start and build your very own podcast channel.

Creatives and content creators are turning to podcasts as a medium to express themselves and share their stories to their listeners. Even a few Filipino celebrities have started their own podcast channels as a means to connect with their fans and discuss their experiences and learnings in life.

Artista couples Megan Young and Mikael Daez, and Saab Magalona and Jim Bacarro both run their own podcasts, "#BehindRelationshipGoals" and "Wake Up With Jim & Saab," respectively, where they can freely talk about their relationships and struggles.

Voice over artist and viral TikTok star Inka Magnaye also has her own ASMR podcast called "Sleeping Pill with Inka" where she reads stories and poems to help her listeners fall to sleep.

With so many topics, people, and ideas that can be discussed out there, more and more people are starting up their own podcast channels to let their voice be heard! However, how does one actually go about creating their very own podcast?

Matthew McLean of The Podcast Host, a blog dedicated to helping others start a podcast and build an audience, wrote a comprehensive guide on the basics of making a podcast.

First Ep in for a new #podcast. Exciting for us, even now! Have you started anything new lately?

Here are some of the tips The Podcast Host shared in the guide:

According to McLean, the very first step to creating a podcast is determining the "What" and the "Who"--what's your podcast and who is it for?

Addressing these questions are important because it helps to determine what your perspective is and the target the audience that you want to attract.

Once that's done, then comes naming the podcast.

McLean suggests making a clever name that's catchy or a descriptive name that makes it easier for potential listeners to search. An attractive cover art and description is also a must to easily catch someone's attention to give the podcast a try.

As for the equipment, the bare minimum set-up you would need is a computer, a USB microphone and internet access which is great for beginners.

The computer also has to have a recording and editing software to process the audio. Here are three of The Podcast Host's recommended recording software:

"Audacity: a good quality, free-of-charge audio editing application. For the majority of people, it caters to all your podcasting needs.

"Adobe Audition: a Pro-level production tool - steep learning curve, but great workflow, and feature-rich. It's available through a paid subscription.

"Alitu: The Podcast Maker: the easiest possible experience. This is a web app which can automate audio cleanup, adding music and publishing to your host. It also offers great editing and episode building tools."

Once everything is recorded and edited, all that's left is to publish it to a podcast hosting service and submit it to directories such as Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google Podcasts. If you want to learn more about his techniques and tricks, head to his official website and Podcast channel.

Now that you're fully equipped with the knowledge you need to make your podcast dreams come true, you're ready to grab the mic and chat away!
