Music icon Tina Turner has passed away, her family announced in a statement on May 25 local time.
Known as the "Queen of Rock 'n' Roll" Tina died peacefully in her home in Küsnacht, Switzerland after a long battle with several health conditions including intestinal cancer, high blood pressure, kidney failure, and a past stroke.
She was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016, three years after her stroke. Despite a successful surgery to remove cancerous polyps, her health still deteriorated.
In 2017, she had a kidney transplant, which she detailed in her official autobiography released in 2018 titled Tina Turner: My Love Story.
Turner began her career in the 1950s during the early years of rock 'n' roll.
She is well-known for her chart-topping hit "What's Love Got to Do with It." Turner won six of her eight Grammy Awards in the 1980s. In that decade alone, she scored dozens of hit singles including "Typical Male," "The Best," "Private Dancer" and "Better Be Good to Me." Her performance in Rio de Janeiro in 1988 drew 180,000 people, which remains "one of the largest concert audiences for any single performer."
She was married to musician Ike Turner from 1962-1978. Years after her divorce, she remarried with then music executive Erwin Bach in 2013. Tina is survived by her husband, and her children Ronnie Turner, Raymond Craig Turner, Michael Turner, and Ike Turner Jr.
Public figures including former US President Barack Obama, and musicians Mick Jagger, Rick Astley, Bette Midler, and Ciara have expressed their grief and condolences for Tina's passing
Tina Turner was raw. She was powerful. She was unstoppable. And she was unapologetically herself--speaking and singing her truth through joy and pain; triumph and tragedy. Our beloved #TinaTurner has died. From #Nutbush to the top, she was an absolutely brilliant performer and inspiration to us all. May flights of angels sing her to her rest, but if I know Tina, she is singing lead.
