Coconut oil

What makes VCO a potential cure for coronavirus?

The verdict is finally out after months of extensive research. According to the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), virgin coconut oil (VCO) can decrease the coronavirus count by 60 to 90%.

This is big news considering that vaccines against COVID-19 remains under trial stages.

And for a country still struggling to contain the virus, it's good to know that VCO is readily available on our domestic shores. The Philippines, after all, is one of the top producers of coconut in the entire world.

So what exactly is virgin coconut oil and what are its health benefits? Let's find out.

What is VCO?

Virgin coconut oil is extracted from fresh coconut meat. It is produced by cold-pressing the liquid from the coconut milk. The oil is then extracted from the milk and water, revealing a milky appearance.

It is important to note that virgin coconut oil retains the fresh coconut aroma. Keep this in mind when buying products labeled as VCO.

What are the health benefits?

VCO is rich in lauric acid (ranging from 45% to 53%)--a potent ingredient with anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. This helps the body heal quickly to fight off cold symptoms. In short, VCO boosts the immune system against viral diseases.

Coconut oil naturally contains fatty acids that raise good cholesterol in the body, which is good for the heart and overall cardio health.

It also has anti-inflammatory action that soothes the limbs and joints. This is the reason why VCO is commonly used to alleviate arthritis, gout, rheumatism, and swelling of the joints.

What did the study say?

The DOST study led by Professor Fabian Dayrit from the Ateneo De Manila University revealed that compounds in virgin coconut oil improves cell survival.

It was on April 19 when Philippine experts began looking at the potential of VCO in reducing the symptoms of COVID-19 in patients.

Research conducted by Dayrit and Dr. Mary Newport of Spring Hill Neonatology in Florida, USA highlighted the antiviral compounds of coconut oil. They noted that coconut oil derivatives are safe and effective in humans and animals.

The DOST, however, will conduct more studies to further solidify its current findings on VCO's efficacy against COVID-19.
