Kid Cudi Kurt Cobain

This month marks the 27th year of Cobain's death.

It's been 27 years since Kurt Cobain's death but his influence continues to loom large among the new generation of artists across all genres.

This couldn't have been more evident during the recent Saturday Night Live (SNL) appearance of rapper-songwriter Scott Ramon Seguro Mescudi a.k.a. Kid Cudi.

The 37-year-old rapper paid tribute to the fallen Nirvana frontman by sporting a green cardigan and a floral dress in his performance of his songs, “Tequila Shots” and “Sad People.”

“Virgil [Abloh] designed the dress for me. I told him I wanted to show love to Kurt w a floral print sundress and this man made a masterpiece. Thank You @virgilabloh ur a f***in genius!! Love you man we did it!!!,” the rapper wrote on Twitter.

Nirvana appeared on SNL in 1992 where the band performed its hit single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” and “Territorial Pissings.”

The band came back in 1993 to promote what turned out to be its final studio album, In Utero.

Feminist grunge legend

Kurt Cobain was famous for wearing worn out sneakers, tattered jeans and t-shirts topped with cardigans - an antithesis of the glitzy and over the top fashion prevalent among glam rock groups, which Cobain despised.

The grunge icon was also known for wearing dresses on stage to promote his feminist ethos and challenge rock music's macho stereotype.

Nirvana's massive success following the release of the band's 1991 groundbreaking album, Nevermind, gave Cobain more leverage to speak his mind on social issues like homophobia and violence against women.

“If any of you, in any way, hate homosexuals, people of color or women, please do this one favor for us--leave us the f**k alone. Don't come to our shows and don't buy our records,” Cobain scathingly wrote on the liner notes of Nirvana's 1992's compilation album, Incesticide.

“Rape is one of the most terrible crimes on earth and it happens every few minutes. The problem with groups who deal with rape is that they try to educate women about how to defend themselves. What really needs to be done is teaching men not to rape. Go to the source and start there,” he said in an interview with NME way back in 1991.

Cobain would commit suicide at the young age of 27. His body was found in his Seattle home by an electrician on April 8, 1994.

He left behind a wife, Hole singer-songwriter and actress Courtney Love, and daughter Frances Bean.
