Try these diabetic-friendly smoothies that also have superb health benefits

Diabetic people are advised to avoid consuming sugary food and drinks to prevent their blood sugar levels from spiking.

Some of the notorious drinks that are a no-no for diabetics are carbonated drinks, energy drinks, and some fruit drinks--all of which are deliciously tempting especially during the summer.

It can really be hard to avoid these drinks high in sugar, but of course, we must prioritize our health.

And if you're a diabetic, do not despair because there are other sweet and healthy alternatives out there that do not contain artificial sweeteners.

In an episode of 'Pinoy MD,' registered nutritionist-dietitians Marie Ann Abacan and her son Chef Chino Lorenzo Abacan shared the recipes for some of their restaurant's green smoothies.

Try these diabetic-friendly smoothies to add some much-needed sweetness to your life.

Weight Loss Green Smoothie

Here's the perfect recipe for diabetics looking to shed off some weight. It also contains superfoods maca and chia seeds.

Ingredients:

½ ripe mango

2 tsps. dried moringa leaves (malunggay)

½ cup green tea or black tea

1-piece saging na saba

1-piece saging na lakatan

1 cup lettuce

1 tsp. maca powder

chia seeds

Procedure:

1. Soak the chia seeds in water for an hour.

2. Put all the ingredients in the blender, except the chia seeds.

3. Blend the ingredients until the desired consistency is achieved.

4. Put the mixture in a glass and add the soaked chia seeds.

Anti-Cancer Green Smoothie

If you want a smoothie that has anti-cancer properties, try this recipe which contains wheatgrass that is high in antioxidants.

Ingredients:

wheatgrass powder

yellow watermelon

saging na saba

green apple

ice cubes

Procedure:

1. Put all the ingredients in the blender.

2. Add ice cubes and blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

Anti-Aging Green Smoothie

Keep your skin healthy and young-looking with this anti-aging smoothie that has cucumber and lemon juice, both known to be rich in Vitamin C and can help keep your skin hydrated.

Ingredients:

cucumber

lemon juice

stevia (natural source of sugar)

1 glass of water

ice cubes

chia seeds

Procedure:

1. Soak the chia seeds in water for an hour.

2. Put all the ingredients in a blender, except the chia seeds.

3. Blend for 30 seconds to 1 minute.

4. Add the soaked chia seeds.

As an extra tip, when choosing fruits for your smoothies, always go for fruits with low glycemic index or low sugar content such as berries.
