Katrina Halili plays Angelika Santibañez, the perfect example of a person whose name does not fit her personality. And she does it with her own personal stamp.
Angelika Santibañez is a perfect example of a person whose name does not fit her personality. Although seemingly nice and charming, this woman is set to prove that her name hides the scheming character that lies beneath her saintly guise. Text by Jessa Ericka C. Bien Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio
StarStruck alumna
Katrina Halili chuckles as she speaks about Angelika in theprimetime hit,
Marimar.
“Pa-bad na nang pa-bad, pasama [na siya] nang pasama” the young actress says, describing how her character has progressed throughout the show’s airing. From Angelika’s meek beginnings as Renato Santibañez’s (
Richard Gomez) young submissive wife, she now has the tables turned as she heartlessly tortures her husband and lords over their businesses.

“Actually, in-improve ko siya” Katrina says, comparing the way she gives life to Angelika to its Mexican counterpart. “Napanood ko 'yung Marimar pero never kong nagustuhan si Angelika. (Kaya) nung tinanggap ko 'yung role na 'yan, gusto ko, magkaroon ng buhay 'yung Angelika” she shares.
The Beauty in Ugly
Reinventing Angelika started with the way the character dresses up.
Katrina admits she never liked the former Angelika’s style, so she gave the character a whole new flair. “May peg ako eh, gusto ko parang Barbie look, na kahit maldita or nakakaasar na ako, at some point maku-cute-an ka pa rin” she confesses. A self-confessed a Barbie doll fan, Katrina has indeed incorporated the chic doll’s fashion to the otherwise conservative personality.
This is how
Katrina makes sure viewers will still find something lovable in Angelika, despite the fact that she is everyone’s favorite person to hate. “Bi(ni)bigyan ko ng buhay ‘to [kasi] gusto ko may maririnig ako na, ‘Uy, si Angelika, ang cute ng suot niya, ang cute ng hair niya, ganoon” she says. “Hindi puro [si]
Marimar. Hindi ‘yung, ‘Ay, ang sama niya’. Ang sama na nga ng ginagawa niya ang pangit pa ng hitsura niya” she adds with a laugh.

The sexy actress puts more action in Angelika’s persona by experimenting with her voice and sometimes imitating the way Mexican actors speak. “Pag medyo sinisipag, 'yung boses ko ginagawa ko talagang Mexican. As in, para akong nagte-teatro.”
She finds
support in her little theatric acts as her on-screen partner Richard Gomez performs exactly the way she does. “Si Kuya Richard, ganun din siya umarte. Malaki rin 'yung movements (niya) so nagkakasundo kaming dalawa, nagja-jive. Ang ganda-ganda ng mga eksena (with him). Para kaming nagte-teatro, nakakatuwa.”
Comic Antagonist
Although already a tried-and-tested anti-hero, it came as a surprise when Katrina admitted that “mabigat talaga 'yung Angelika sa loob ko [kasi] hindi ako ganyan”. To lessen the pressures that giving life to the character brings, the young star says “ginagawa ko siyang comedy, hindi kontra-bida talaga.”
Katrina makes sure she wholeheartedly gives what the role demands from her. In fact, she enjoys negative comments affected viewers have for her. “Nakakatuwa, kasi ibig sabihin effective ka” she concludes.
