Yasmien Kurdi is given the role of a lifetime as the oppressed Guadalupe in Pasan Ko ang Daigdig.
Pasan Ko ang Daigdig is the classic film directed by the one and only, Lino Brocka. Well received by the critics and the audience, this movie presented a chance for Sharon Cuneta to showcase her acting skills. Twenty years later, Yasmien Kurdi is offered the same role and the same opportunity. Will she shine as brightly as the Megastar? Text by KC M. Abalos. Photos courtesy of GMA Network. Remembering Lupe Through the writing genius of Pablo S. Gomez, Filipinos learned the tale of Guadalupe (Lupe), first as a comic novel then later, on the big screen. starsstarsLupe earns a living by scavenging for hidden riches in a garbage dumpsite. But for the young man Carding, Lupe is the real jewel amidst the trash. Her beautiful singing voice rises over and above the stench and the poverty. Lupe literally carries her mother on her back, an obvious metaphor for the burden that she bears. In GMA’s Sinenovela version of Pasan Ko ang Daigdig, Yasmien Kurdi is given a chance to play Lupe. She has the voice but is she ready for such a demanding role? According to Ms. Gina Alajar who will play Metring, Lupe’s crippled mother, the young actress is more than ready. “Si Yasmien kasi masipag and willing to learn,” she said. Ms. Gina also adds that Yasmien knows a lot for a girl her age. The veteran actress commends Yasmien’s earlier performances, as far back as Starstruck. Yasmien’s Burden There were many issues surrounding this project. It was rumored that Jennylyn Mercado was originally chosen for the role. How does Yasmien feel about this? She answers with, “We’re not talking about it because it’s not a big deal.” She adds that it is the audience that chose JC de Vera and her to play the role, based on the good ratings of Pati Ba Pintig ng Puso. Next question, what is the biggest challenge in becoming Lupe? stars“Siguro, maging matapang all the time. Kasi Lupe’s role is so matapang. Mahirap i-portray dahil every scene nanginging ako dahil sa tension. Sobrang pagod lang talaga. Dito lang sa show na ito, first time ‘pag uwi ko ng bahay, pagod na pagod ako.” The young actress went on to describe how different Lupe is from the other characters she has already portrayed. “Jenna is sweet. Charming, sobrang uto-uto. Charisma is different, mayabang naman. Si Mira naman mataas siya. Feeling niya magiging queen talaga siya. Si Lupe, ugaling kalye siya na parang makikipag-away kahit ano mangyari.” Looks like Yasmien is more than ready to take on, not just the show, but the world as well.
