The name Roi Vinzon has for the longest time been equated with the action movie genre. This changed after his depiction of General Armando Soriano in My Husband’s Lover, where he showed his emotional side. Now, he is back in GMA Telebabad in his most sinister role to date via Carmela: Ang Pinakamagandang Babae sa Mundong Ibabaw.

Now, he is back in GMA Telebabad in his most sinister role to date via Carmela: Ang Pinakamagandang Babae sa Mundong Ibabaw.

What was his initial reaction when he found out that he got the role?

“Nabigla ako. Akala ko medyo suave lang. Noong nakita ko ‘yung script, parang binabasa mo pa lang, naiinis ka na sa character. ‘Yan ang character ko dito- hindi kagigiliwan talaga. I don’t know kung may following pa ako after,” answered the iconic action star.

He added, “Kumukontrabida ako sa film pero sa TV, ibang klase. ‘Pag kontrabida ako sa film, halos puro lalaki ang nanonood. Okay lang sa kanila ‘yun. Dito, hindi ko alam. Medyo mabigat ito. Hinahanda ko na ang sarili ko sa sasabihin ng mga babae at mga nanonood talaga ng teleserye.”

How would he describe his character in the show?

“Masyado siyang strong. Masaydo siyang wild. Wala siyang alam na matino, puro kalokohan lang at pagma-manipulate ng mga tao doon sa small town. Sobrang sama, pero okay lang. Gusto ko ‘yung role.”

Though his character is a far cry from who he is in real life, the veteran actor welcomes the challenge.

Sir Roi quipped, “Napakabait ko sa totoong buhay, ‘di ba?”

He continued, “Ang switching ko kasi sa character, ganun-ganun na lang from bida to kontrabida. Nasanay na ako. Nagbida na rin kasi ako sa film. Madali siyang i-twist kasi parang ‘pag nag-revenge ka sa film, kontrabida ka na agad. Ito, ibang-iba talaga.”

How does it feel that right after My Husband’s Lover and Katipunan, he now has another high-caliber show that a lot of people are clamoring for?

“Pinasasalamatan ko sina Ma'am Lilybeth [Rasonable]. Si Redgie [Magno] kasi kaibigan ko ‘yan since noong nag-uumpisa pa lang ako. Sabi niya sa akin dati, ang sama mong umarte at wala akong makita sa’yo masyado. Sabi ko, oo nga,” he recalled.

After decades in the industry, Roi Vinzon is no longer the newbie who is trying to figure out how to act. Now an award-winning actor, he has definitely come a long way in his showbiz journey. It looks like nothing can stop him from doing what he does best.

“Marami na akong pinagdaanan kaya siguro ito na ‘yung regalo sa akin. Wala naman akong kapatid o pinsan sa showbiz. Ako lang mag-isa ang nagsikap. So far, happy naman ako sa naging career ko. Wala akong pinagsisisihan,” he said.
