Singer-actor Ronnie Liang fell victim to scammers after his e-wallet was ransacked by someone who pretended to be a GCash agent.
Ronnie narrated the incident in a Facebook post last March 25 complete with screenshots of his conversation with the fake agent.
“The scammer was able to hack my gcash & took away thousands from my Gcash account. (nagtira pa ng 8.97 pesos),” wrote Ronnie.
“Sharing this to raise awareness of how these online scams are so rampant and how vulnerable the system is. Please share this post to spread information and to serve as warning to all the gcash users.”
Some of those who commented on Ronnie's post took note of several red flags as proof that the person that Ronnie was dealing with was not a company representative.
The fake agent asked for Ronnie's OTP or one-time password, personal information, and his credit limit to access his account.
The unfortunate incident came a few days after Ronnie posted on Facebook that someone from South Korea has used his credit card to purchase a smartphone.
The National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has warned the public against the proliferation of cybercrimes as people rely online to carry out transactions due to the pandemic.
The NBI specifically advised the public not to give personal information especially for transactions that involve money or banks.
“Contact your bank's website or customer service hotline or post the emails or messages you received and let your bank validate it or file complaints [on] your behalf to the appropriate government or law enforcement agencies,” NBI officer Eric Distor reminded in April last year.
