Johanna Uy was a Philippine sports gem gone too soon.

The Philippine Sports Commission confirmed the death of Johanna Uy, a member of the Philippine national underwater hockey team on Wednesday, February 9. She was only 41.

According to reports, the South East Asian (SEA) Games silver medalist perished in a fire incident along with her 67-year-old mother Helen as they were unable to escape their rooms on the second floor of their house.

Furthermore, the fire in their 3-storey home started at around 4 am and quickly reached the first alarm. Their house help was able to get out of the burning house but the two remained trapped inside.

Several athletes have offered their condolences on social media.
