Hollywood celebrity and founder of makeup brand Rare Beauty, Selena Gomez, is celebrating International Women's Month with a new milestone. She is now the most-followed woman on Instagram and the first woman to reach 400 million followers on the social media platform.
In February 2023, Selena surpassed Kylie Jenner, the former titleholder, reaching 384 million followers on Instagram. This March, the Only Murders in the Building star and producer became the first woman to have 400 million followers on the platform having a total of 402 million followers.
Selena celebrated the new milestone by sharing a series of photos of her fans. In the caption, she wrote, “Wishing I could hug all 400 million of you.”
While Selena is grateful for the love and support she's been receiving from her fans, the famous celebrity has always been an open book about the effects of social media on her mental health. Once, she even admitted to deleting her account because of the cruel body-shaming comments she's been receiving on the platform.
In an interview with Vanity Fair, she revealed, “People can call me ugly or stupid and I'm like, Whatever. But these people get detailed. They write paragraphs that are so specific and mean. I would constantly be crying. I constantly had anxiety…I couldn't do it anymore. It was a waste of my time.”
“I lied. I would go online and I would post a picture of myself and I would say, 'It doesn't matter. I'm not accepting what you're saying.' All the while being in the room posting and crying my eyes out because nobody deserves to hear those things,” she further admits.
Ever since she was a kid, everyone put Selena on a pedestal and placed high expectations on her just to fit into society's so-called standard of beauty and fame. This took a toll on her physically, mentally, and emotionally. But through the help of her trustworthy friends, family, and fans, she's learned to embrace herself and be the confident woman that she is today.
