The iconic children's program, Sesame Street, just made Pride Month happier with a monumental move of introducing gay dads in their show for the first time.
In their June 17 episode aptly titled “Family Day,” Elmo and the rest of the residents on Sesame Street celebrated Family Day.
Elmo's neighbors and their family members joined the celebration, including Big Bird and his Granny Bird, which Big Bird thought couldn't make it but was actually there to surprise him.
The historic moment happened when actress Suki Lopez's character, Nina, introduced her brother Dave (Chris Costa), his husband Frank (Alex Weisman), and their daughter Mia (Olivia Perez) to everyone.
Right after being introduced to their neighbors and friends, the gay dads' daughter Mia, said, “Papi! Daddy! Sesame Street is even more amazing than you said.”
Alan Muraoka, the actor who plays Alan in Sesame Street and also co-director of the said episode, celebrated the milestone in an Instagram post.
He wrote, “Sesame Street has always been a welcoming place of diversity and inclusion. So I'm so excited to introduce Nina's brother Dave, his husband Frank, and their daughter Mia to our sunny street. I am so honored and humbled to have co-directed this important and milestone episode. Love is love, and we are so happy to add this special family to our Sesame family. Happy Pride to all!”
Chris Costa also shared his excitement over being part of the landmark episode on Instagram.
“I am beyond thrilled to be joining the 'Sesame Street' family in this celebration of diversity, inclusion, and most importantly, love!” Chris said in his caption. “I hope Dave, Frank, and Mia warm your hearts. And remember, it's love that brings families together.”
Alex Weisman also takes pride in playing one of the gay dads in the said episode.
He said in an IG post, “It's an honor to introduce our family, Dave, Frank and Mia to 'Sesame Street!' As you can see, families come in all shapes and sizes. … Love is love is love, and it's a lifelong dream to get to be a part of the Sesame family.”
