The internet-famous doctor reflected on Filipino culture, beauty pageants, and his admiration for Filipino nurses.
Popular medical content creator Mikhail Varshavski, better known as Doctor Mike, recently sat down with Filipino nurse and content creator John Dela Cruz, popularly known as Nurse John, for an episode of his podcast, The Checkup with Doctor Mike.

During their conversation, Doctor Mike spoke warmly about his experiences working with Filipino nurses throughout his medical career.
According to the internet-famous physician, Filipinos bring a unique sense of positivity and joy to the workplace.
“Every time I worked a night shift and there was a Filipino nurse, the amount of laughter and happiness on that shift was incredible,” Doctor Mike shared. “You would think that medicine, in general, can be sad because people are sick, and since we're working the night shift, we should be grumpy. But it was smiles all around.”
He added, “There's this infectious happiness that comes from working with a fellow Filipino.”
Nurse John then shared his perspective on why many Filipinos remain optimistic despite life's challenges.
“We are just happy people. We see the good in everything that we do,” he said. “I lived most of my life in the Philippines, and with the struggles we go through, the only thing you can do is stay positive and look for the good in your life every single day.”
He continued, “I feel that's why a lot of Filipinos are happy. Getting a job that's out of the country makes us so grateful because we're able to provide for and feed our families back home.”
Later in the interview, the conversation shifted to beauty pageants.
Nurse John asked Doctor Mike if he was familiar with the Miss Universe pageant.
“I don't know if you know what Miss Universe is?” Nurse John joked.
Doctor Mike replied with a laugh, “Unfortunately, I'm very well versed.”
When Nurse John revealed that he follows the competition, Doctor Mike shared a personal connection to the pageant world.
“You probably don't know, but I should share some of my history. I dated Pia Wurtzbach at the peak of her career,” he said.
Nurse John was visibly surprised by the revelation.
“Hold on! Pia Wurtzbach? Are you kidding me right now? That is so funny,” he reacted.
He then jokingly told the doctor, “You're part Filipino, basically.”
Doctor Mike agreed, saying he had absorbed parts of Filipino culture through the experience.
“If you date a Filipino, you become Filipino in that sense,” Nurse John remarked.
Doctor Mike appeared to agree, acknowledging his connection to the culture.
Doctor Mike and Pia were previously linked several years ago after the beauty queen won the Miss Universe 2015 crown. In March 2023, Pia married Beautiful Destinations CEO and founder Jeremy Jauncey in a private ceremony in Seychelles.

Aside from being one of the world's most popular medical influencers, Doctor Mike was named People Magazine's "Sexiest Doctor Alive" in 2015. He has since built a massive online following through his educational and health-related content.
