American actress Shannen Doherty, known for her iconic role as Brenda Walsh in the '90s TV drama Beverly Hills, 90210, passed away at age 53 after a years-long battle with cancer.
The actress's publicist, Leslie Sloane, confirmed the news to People magazine. "It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty. On Saturday, July 13, she lost her battle with cancer after many years of fighting the disease," she shared.
Leslie added, "The devoted daughter, sister, aunt and friend was surrounded by her loved ones as well as her dog, Bowie. The family asks for their privacy at this time so they can grieve in peace."
Shannen publicly disclosed her cancer diagnosis in 2015 and went into remission in April 2017, only for the cancer to return in 2019. Then in 2020, she revealed she had metastatic stage 4 cancer. Last year, she announced it had spread to her brain and underwent surgery. Sadly, the cancer progressed to her bones.
In an interview with People magazine, Shannen courageously expressed, “I'm not done with living. I'm not done with loving. I'm not done with creating. I'm not done with hopefully changing things for the better.”
Before her passing, she aimed to raise awareness and funds for cancer research, advocating for the individuality and contributions of those with terminal illnesses.
Shannen began her acting career at 11 years old, appearing in the final season of Little House on the Prairie as Jenny Wilder. She gained fame for her role in Heathers and as Brenda in Beverly Hills, 90210. Later, she starred as the eldest sister, Prue Halliwell in Charmed.
Shannen was married three times, most recently to photographer Kurt Iswarienko, from whom she filed for divorce in 2023.
