SHOWNU, HYUNGWON of MONSTA X

SHOWNU X HYUNGWON of MONSTA X made their highly anticipated comeback with their second mini-album, 'LOVE ME,' on May 21.

Returning after nearly three years, MONSTA X's first sub-unit is already generating global buzz, enthralling fans with their unique chemistry and a gripping love narrative.

LOVE ME highlights the duo's signature restrained yet sophisticated mood, featuring seven tracks that explore the diverse moments and complex emotions of love through a unique lens. Leading the album is "Do You Love Me," which captures the tension of a push-and-pull relationship where neither side is fully sure of their feelings. Built on a foundation of heavy drums, brass, and guitar, the song seamlessly blends SHOWNU's steady presence with HYUNGWON's refined sensibility. Instead of pure intensity, it draws listeners in through mood and nuance.

The album also offers the vintage “Superstitious,” the band-driven “In My Head,” the R&B “Breathe,” and the dream pop dance “Accelerator,” alongside the members' solo tracks “Around & Go” and “NO AIR.” Each song reveals different facets of love, expanding the album's emotional landscape.

With SHOWNU anchoring the stage with strength and HYUNGWON refining the mood with intricate sensitivity, the duo departs from the group's signature intensity and displays a different allure. Ultimately, this synergy demonstrates how diverse textures can coexist within MONSTA X, which is currently on “THE X : NEXUS” world tour.

“If MONSTA X is mostly about being powerful and flashy, our sub-unit offers a more calm and chilled-out vibe that showcases a new style of performance,” SHOWNU said.

HYUNGWON added, “That restrained feel and intriguing aura set us apart.”

The following is the full Q&A with the members.

Q. It's been about two years and ten months since your last comeback as a sub-unit. How does it feel to be returning after such a long time?

SHOWNU: It feels great to finally share new music with our fans again. Since they've been waiting for us, we really wanted to prepare well and show our appreciation through this album. We worked hard to bring something fresh in terms of concept, music, and performance, so I hope everyone likes it.

HYUNGWON: Starting a new chapter is always exciting, but since it's been a while since we last promoted as a sub-unit, we're even more thrilled to share this with everyone. We wanted to share it as soon as possible. We spent a lot of time thinking about what SHOWNU X HYUNGWON can uniquely bring and what new sides we could show, so I hope people enjoy the album.

Q. What kind of message does this album carry?

SHOWNU: This album expresses different perspectives on love and a wide range of emotions in a more delicate and detailed way. We also focused a lot on the finer details so we could show our own musical color and performance style more clearly.

HYUNGWON: We talked about love in our previous album, but this time, we have more of our own story and narrative woven into it. As we've become more involved in the album-making process, especially in areas like producing, I think LOVE ME reflects more of our thoughts and stories.

Q. You took on a wide variety of concepts this time. What did you want to express through them?

SHOWNU: Since this album explores many different emotions, we wanted to express those feelings visually through a wider range of concepts. Through the styling and outfits in the concept photos, we also tried to capture different emotional nuances.

HYUNGWON: Every time we show a new concept, our fans seem to love it. It made me realize that trying new things and showing different sides of ourselves can give fans a new kind of energy too. That's why I want to keep showing more diverse sides of us moving forward.

Q. Can you introduce the lead track “Do You Love Me”?

SHOWNU: It's a song that captures the tension and push-and-pull emotions of not being fully certain about love. When I first heard it, I was really drawn to the song's sense of tension. I also felt like it was a track that could really highlight our performance strengths.

HYUNGWON: I think it's a song that really shows how much we've grown both vocally and performance-wise. It also highlights our more restrained charm in a clearer way, so I hope people pay attention to that point as well.

Q. Is there a title, goal, or achievement you hope to gain through this album?

SHOWNU: As time goes by, I find myself focusing less on results or achievements and more on wanting to do this for a long time. I want to continue exploring different directions with HYUNGWON, hold concerts, and spend a long time with our fans.

HYUNGWON: First, I hope the public really comes to recognize SHOWNU X HYUNGWON as a sub-unit. And for our fans, I hope this comeback exceeds their expectations. I want people to think, “SHOWNU X HYUNGWON can pull off something like this too?” and keep giving fans that sense of surprise and excitement.

Q. Is there anything you'd like to say to MONBEBE, who have been waiting for such a long time?

SHOWNU: I think this album could only happen because MONBEBE was there for us. We know how much love and support our fans have continued to give us while waiting all this time, and we prepared this album wanting to repay that support with even better music and performances.

HYUNGWON: Over the years, I've become even more grateful that we've been able to stay together for so long. While preparing for this album, I kept thinking about what MONBEBE would want to see and what they would enjoy. I really hope everyone likes it, and I hope we can all have fun together during this comeback.
