Skarlet Brown

Ska singer Skarlet Brown debuts the song she wrote for her daughter on Spotlight Music Sessions.

Ska and jazz singer Skarlet Brown sang one of her most unique singles, "Lullabye for Ganei'' on the GMA online music channel Spotlight Music Sessions on Friday, November 3.

In an exclusive interview with GMANetwork.com, Skarlet revealed that 'Lullabye for Ganei' is a piece she wrote for her daughter, Mishkamaru Ganeir.

“It talks about a mother singing in her mind, a lullaby to her child who is already asleep. Actually, it's a lullaby for the baby and yourself,” she said.

Skarlet noted how magical it feels to watch your sleeping child and “bask in the beauty” of them as they doze off as the main inspiration for the song.

“It's just magical, and it's just you love your child, you love seeing your child sleeping and that's the only time you say, 'God, Lord, you love me, you gave me this beautiful creature, this little one, little me,'” she added.

Skarlet also shared her beginnings, from joining college bands and performing at different schools for various events singing goth-punk music, until 1994 when she was sought out by the band Pu3ska (Putreska), delving into Ska, Reggae, and “a little bit of soul.”

“They asked me to join their group and I left my day job as a marketing person and pursued a career in music,” she said.

After she left the band, Skarlet formed another band, The Brownbeat All-Stars. She also pursued Jazz before finally going solo.

“As I mature, I could relate more to a lot of Blues, a little bit of sophistication when it comes to Latin music, Jazz, ballads, that kind of thing and I don't know what makes it tick for me, probably freedom.”

She added, “Freedom to explore because Jazz is very much into that, spontaneity and improvisation. Those are the three most important and fundamental things that I appreciate about jazz.”

Skarlet and Pu3ska were given a chance to reunite just before the Pandemic hit in 2019, and she noted how grateful they were to have done the reunion concert.

She revealed that while they were initially nervous to be performing together after so long, she described the experience as exhilarating.

“Parang renewing ties, lahat kami may mga anak na. We were singles tapos pagbalik namin dun, kasama na namin ýung mga partners namin, spouses, and 'yung mga anak and it's a different feeling,” she said.

“I cannot be as feisty as Myra Ruaro of Pu3ka that is so like Tasmanian Devil-ish kung kumilos, but the energy was there and the maturity of the sound was evident, tighter than before, and more profound than before. And buti na lang ginawa namin 'yun,” she added.

Now though, with her restaurants, bars, and music, Skarlet shared one of her dream achievements, and that is to put up an artist village, a place where artists who don't have anyone to live with, can stay and retire.

“I was thinking I could hook up with people who build houses, 'yung mga foundations like that so that the artists could have a simple home and a village where we could plant our own food,” she shared.

While her dream to have an Artist Village almost came to fruition, the Pandemic halted everything and she had to stop her plans for the meantime. However, despite the setback, Skarlet said that she will continue to pursue this dream.
