Got ant problems at home? Maybe this concoction from Slater Young can help you out.

When you see one ant inside your home, chances are there are thousands more hiding in plain sight.

While this may not bother most people, this is not the case for Slater Young and his wife, Kryz Uy, who is allergic to this insect.

“We were having ant problems, and si Kryz is super allergic to ants. When she gets bitten, the area gets swollen, and it lasts for months,” he says in his latest vlog.

Aside from allergies, ants can be a big nuisance because a colony of ants can cause a lot of damage to your home as well.

The Fire and Harvester ants bite humans while Carpenter ants damage building materials. Ants, in general, can also certainly contaminate food because they carry bacteria all over their bodies.

Well, fortunately for us, Slater has a family secret that will help you get rid of ants and keep your house absolutely clean.

According to the 32-year-old actor-turned-businessman, “This concoction is going to be super cheap and super affordable.

“You can buy ant poison in hardware stores, and it's usually placed in a small container for P100 or P200. But this is going to cost less than that.”

To make his DIY ant poison, all you need to do is dilute ¾ cup of sugar in 250ml hot water so that the concoction will last longer. Afterward, you put in another 250ml lukewarm water in the same mixture.

His mixture's killing power lies in the final ingredient: a teaspoon of borax.

Borax or sodium tetraborate, is a powdery white material used as a cleaning product to get rid of stains and molds, but it can also kill insects such as ants.

“This [borax] is not poisonous to humans,” Slater explains.

“This is more in the lines of soap. So you don't want to eat it, and it doesn't kill you if you accidentally eat it.

“But it is very poisonous to ants. So you still have to be very careful with this.”

Slater then transfers the mixture into small containers with small holes.

But how does the solution work?

It's simple, the sugar attracts the ants and they would most likely take droplets of the solution back to their colony. When the ants feed on the syrup, it's game over. Borax wreaks havoc inside the ants' digestive system, gradually killing them within 24 to 48 hours.

Furthermore, worker ants like to share food with the colony. And gradually, this feeding and sharing process will kill off the queen and her entire colony of ants. This can take anywhere from a couple of days to a couple of weeks, depending on the colony's size.

“By putting this around the house will help you contain the ants,” Slater advises.

“Don't be discouraged if it doesn't kill the ants instantly. Most of the ants that we want to eliminate will not be killed in the solution but their nest.”

Ants are common home invaders and they can be hard to get rid of, but it is possible.

Many natural repellents are available for you to use to help eradicate them over time. Keeping your home clean of food that attracts them can also help.

If all else fails, you can hire an exterminator that can help with the problem. Look for companies that use the least toxic products possible and let them know if you have children or pets in your household.
