South Korean superstar Song Joong-Ki has achieved another milestone in his acting career as he top-bills Netflix's upcoming science fiction film titled Space Sweepers.
The film, dubbed as the first Korean space blockbuster, follows the story of a team of misfits or “space sweepers,” who sweep debris scattered in outer space aboard their vessel, Spaceship Victory.
Joong-ki, who plays as pilot Tae-ho, is joined by actors Kim Tae-ri, Jin Seon-kyu, and Yoo Hae-jin as the crew of a space junk collector ship.
During the virtual media conference held recently, Joong-ki revealed that he quickly accepted Tae-ho's role even before reading the script, as this film will be his reunion project with renowned director Jo Sung-hee after the blockbuster film Werewolf Boy in 2012.
“When I worked with the director on 'Werewolf Boy,' I actually heard way back then that he was planning to create this kind of sci-fi movie and I thought it would be really interesting and amazing. And after decades literally, he proposed this role,” the actor said.
On the other hand, Kim Tae-ri, who plays Captain Jang, said that she, together with the whole cast and crew, worked so hard for this film.
“I hope the 'Space Sweepers' the film started something. I am very proud to have created something as a team that we all worked so hard on together,” she said.
Seon-kyu, who portrays engineer Tiger Park's role, said that being part of the film is a tremendous honor.
“I feel almost like, you know, playing for the nation, playing with the flag on my chest as an athlete,” he said.
Meanwhile, Actor Hae-jin, the ship's robot, is all praise for director Sung-hee for doing such an “amazing job.”
“I'm extremely proud, and I like the director really has done an amazing job,” he shared.
The director then said that he wants to introduce a new variety of Korean films to the world through Space Sweepers.
“I just want all of the people across the world to understand that there's a large variety of movies being produced in Korea,” director Jo Sung-hee related.
