Heechul on gay rumors: “I felt that if I denied it, I could possibly disrespect sexual minorities.” Read more:

Super Junior's Heechul received praise from his fans after he revealed the reason why he never denied the rumors that he was gay during his debut with Super Junior in 2005.

In an episode of “7.7 Billion in Love,” the show featured TV personality Hong Suk Chun, who also happens to be a gay actor.

In the one-hour show, Hong Suk Chun brought up the topic of sexual minorities which prompted the K-pop singer to express the reason why he never shut down the rumors.

Heechul said, “People know this but during my debut, there were endless rumors that I was gay. I was named in scandals with male celebrities. It was because I had long hair and wore contact lenses in the early days of my debut.

“At first, I wanted to deny that I was gay but I felt that if I did I could possibly disrespect sexual minorities. Whether it's overseas or in the country, there could be a gay person among the male fans who come to our concerts. I thought that I would feel apologetic towards those fans.”

Fans then reacted positively to how Heechul reacted at a time when being homosexual was taboo.

Kim Heechul made his debut in the KBS2 drama Sharp 2 on March 6, 2005 before becoming a member of the Korean boy group Super Junior.

He has been the talk of the town in January this year after his agency, SM Entertainment, confirmed that he is dating TWICE member Momo.
