iGMA got down and dirty with John “Sweet” Lapus, the host of the ‘Headline Ka John’ segment on everybody’s favorite Sunday showbiz show, S-Files. We asked him to tell us his deepest, darkest thoughts about the people he’s interviewed! So get your eyes and ears ready to find out what gets Sweet’s chismis juices flowing! Text by Yvette U. Tan.
What’s the sweetest headline you’ve delivered on the show?
Sweet: You know, it’s ironic but I think it was an interview with Roxanne Barcelo and Luis Alandy regarding their break-up. I interviewed them separately. That was very sweet.
Really? Why so?
But they were so honest to the point of being sweet. Roxanne just casually admitted na Luis just doesn’t like her, that’s why Luis broke-up (with her). But ang point niya is hindi niya alam iyun. Siguro it’s a sweet lesson for all the girls out there to make sure ang mga boyfriend niyo ay siguradong mahal kayo bago niyo sagutin.
But why did he court her if he didn’t love her?
Sweet: That was Roxanne’s point. It was also a sweet lesson for all the guys out there na huwag kayong manligaw sa isang babae por que nagandahan kayo (sa kanila).
Si Luis naman, in all fairness, it was sweet honesty in Luis’ part to casually admit na it was his fault. Other parties were out of the question. The tabloids and all the articles written about them were out of the question. It was really between the two of them and they were sweet enough to admit it to me.
What’s the most controversial headline you’ve presented?
Sweet: Oh DJ Mo, of course! I did an exclusive interview with DJ Mo (Twister) regarding radio show niya na very controversial now. Fans ni Erik Santos nagalit because Maui Taylor was apparently put on the spot because tinanong siya kung sino sa palagay niya ang artistang bakla ang kailangan umamin, ang sabi ni Maui si Erik Santos. It was blown out of proportion, kumalat, nagkaroon ng issue.
DJ Mo was on the news a lot after that.
Sweet: Precisely. And also nung nainterview ko si DJ Mo about what Donita Rose said about Rufa Mae, na dapat aminin na retoke siya.
What do you think of DJ Mo Twister?
Sweet: I admire Mo Twister. He is very controversial, yes, but he was very honest to me. He was just doing his job and he is just really like that. Sabi nga ni Mo, yung mga na-okray sa radio show ko, you can guest the day after and clarify your side.
So that interview that was very controversial because until now pinag-uusapan pa rin si Mo Twister. And also because of that interview, I was able to exclusively interview Janet McBride, who is Mo’s long-time girlfriend.
Janet McBride came back from the States, right?
Sweet: Yes. For the first time, pagbalik niya nagpainterview si Janet McBride at hindi naman pala siya nabuntis all along. Up to the point where people would approach them or her and ask, “Kamusta ang baby mo?” Poor girl! Yung stigma! I think it’s very controversial now. It was controversial 5 years ago when she left.
