Tonight, our beloved mermaid will finally have her happy ending. Let's swim back and retrace Dyesebel's journey and find out how she became such a big hit in our hearts. Text by Jillian Q. Gatcheco, with interviews by Jason John S. Lim. Photos by Mitch S. Mauricio. The first dive Shortly after she swept us away in MariMar, Marian Rivera began a week-long training on how to become a believable mermaid. But wearing a 10-kilo tail with extra weights is not an easy feat. Although she knew how to swim, going as deep as 40 feet made her nervous. Still, she embraced every challenge fearlessly and mastered her role like she was made for it. Director's view starsSince the Dyesebel project followed right after MariMar, director Joyce Bernal explained that the biggest challenge she had to face was differentiating the two shows. In a previous interview with the director, she mentioned that Marian's role as Dyesebel was actually a bit of a "downgrade" for the actress, especially after her portrayal as MariMar. "[In] MariMar, it gave [Marian the] windows sa lahat ng klase ng acting. From 'zero' acting, to sobrang drama, to love. But [Mars Ravelo's] Dyesebel is light lang. Kung sa tamang takbo ng career, ito yung una niyang [show] dapat. Dito yung starting point, supposed to be. This is light, going to love, then drama. Mas simple yung conflict, di kasing tinde, at mas pambata. Even the character of Dyesebel is bata. Yung utak niya bata. [This is why people shouldn't compare Dyesebel to MariMar]." It keeps on getting better If MariMar was a godsend to Marian and Dingdong's careers, Dyesebel amped it up a notch. The two stars got numerous product endorsements, movie offers and of course, their fair share of rumors. But no rumor could be grave enough to ruin the public's clamor for the phenomenal duo, and the two are set to star in their first big screen team-up together with Dingdong Dantes' original onscreen partner, Iza Calzado . "Ito yung bagay na talagang matagal ko nang hinihintay, and I'm happy that it's going to happen this year. [Especially since] it's with Marian, and also with Iza (Calzado). So talagang ang ganda ng combination," stated Dingdong in a Startalk interview. Dyesebel didn't only make superstars of the two, it also made them the sexiest and most-coveted in local showbiz today. Marian emerged as FHM Philippines' Sexiest for 2008, while Dingdong was included in E!'s 25 Hottest Males from around the world. Giving back To give thanks to fans nationwide who have supported their team-up incessantly, Marian and Dingdong celebrated their August birthdays via a free concert at the Big Dome. (Missed the event? Read up about it here!) They each gave their heartfelt messages during the night. starsMarian imparted, “Kukunin ko na ang pagkakataon para sa lahat ng sumuporta sa akin, simula noong nagumpisa ako," she addressed the crowd. "At lahat ng nagmamahal sa akin, mahal ko kayo!" When it was Dingdong’' turn to give thanks, he said, "Ngayong gabi, ako'y namamangha sa ipinakita niyo sa amin dito sa stage na ito. Tonight, ako ang pinakamalaking fan ninyong lahat. Ako ang naging audience sa ipinakita niyong suporta sa akin. My participation in this industry has been so exciting. But never did I have this great opportunity of receiving blessings one after the other. At ang pinakamalaking blessing sa lahat ay kayo. I love what I'm doing, and I love who I’m doing it for." During that night, Marian also got to reunite with her father whom she has not communicated with in five years—another milestone for the actress. Last words When asked about what she would want Dyesebel to leave with its loyal fan base, direk Joyce expressed that it would have to be the world of Serenea, the underwater kingdom where Dyesebel lives. "Yung world kasi ni Dyesebel, mas pinalawak namin, so yung Serenea, gusto kong yun yung matandaan nila, na may magandang world under the sea, [lalo na para] sa mga bata." Of course, the final words should belong to Dyesebel herself. How is she going to find true love in the end? "Basta, siyempre alam ko naman na tinanggap ko na bilang si Dyesebel na talagang magkaiba ang aming kapalaran ni Fredo (Dingdong), at si Erebus (Alfred Vargas ) 'yung nandyan para sa akin. Pero siyempre sa bandang huli, kung sino pa rin 'yung pinipintig at tinitibok ng puso ni Dyesebel, malamang yun pa rin ang mananalo, 'di ba? Kaya tignan natin kung ano ang magiging katapusan."
