The Happy Fits

The Happy Fits members say working on the song “Another Try” was one of the ways they shook off pandemic malaise.

Everyone felt a little down during the quarantine that ensued at the start of the global coronavirus pandemic, and indie-pop band The Happy Fits were no different.

On GMA's “Behind The Song Podcast,” hosted by Thea Astley, the group shared how they fought off this “quarantine malaise” in their own way.

The group, made up of Filipino-American Calvin Langman, Ross Monteith, and Luke Davis, had just finished recording their last album and were embarking on a tour when news of the lockdown first hit them.

“We were in Arizona and they said that the whole tour was canceled. We thought this was really, really serious. We got home as quick as we could,” recalled drummer Luke. “We thought about how we could stay relevant in people's minds. It would be very easy to just do nothing and lose the momentum that we worked three years to get.”

But rather than lose that momentum, the trio went to work, making 10 music videos for the 10 songs off their 2020 album, “What Could Be Better.” The 14 months of quarantine also ended up giving birth to their latest single, “Another Day.”

“It was definitely inspired by the malaise we all felt after 14 months just doing nothing in quarantine,” explained Calvin. “The song starts out as very downtrodden, a really sad state that's kind of how I feel every time I wake up during quarantine.”

Continuing to make music ended up being a safe place for the band during the uncertain early days of the pandemic.

“Keeping busy that way put us in a mindset that we were comfortable with. We had our close-knit team who's our family now. It helped reinforce that we could do this and that we had each other,” said Luke.

According to Ross, the quarantine also strengthened their bond as a band, so much so that they now live together.

“We've been together throughout the whole pandemic so it's been a lot easier for us to get things done and be productive. It felt good because we didn't have to take any risks like going out and trying things,” he shared.

Aside from talking about shaking off quarantine malaise, the band also shared their excitement at the possibility of visiting the Philippines once the circumstances allow it.

“I'm super excited about Manila. I've never been. My mother and my whole family actually grew up there,” said Calvin. “Her original family and her original house are still there and I'd love to visit and try some authentic Filipino food for once.”

Aside from The Happy Fits, a host of other musical acts are set to appear on the podcast. One of the upcoming guests is K-pop band BTOB. Find out more about them in the gallery below.
