Fort Santiago and Baluarte de San Diego have reopened to visitors following the lifting of strict quarantine restrictions around Metro Manila and neighboring provinces.
The new quarantine measure dubbed “General Community Quarantine with Heightened Restrictions” allows outdoor tourist spots to resume operations at 30 percent capacity.
Both Fort Santiago and Baluarte de San Diego are located inside the historic Intramuros district in Manila.
The Intramuros Administration asked guests to follow health and safety protocols during their visit.
Fort Santiago was erected in 1593 as a defense fortress by Spanish authorities. It eventually served as prison and torture chambers, and was famous for hosting Jose Rizal during his last days leading to his execution in 1896.
Baluarte de San Diego was constructed in 1586 to further fortify the district against potential invaders.
“The re-opening of Fort Santiago and Baluarte de San Diego will allow visitors to again experience the World's Leading Tourist Attraction as recognized by the prestigious World Tourism Awards,” said Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat.
The historic Walled City of Intramuros has played a big role in the Kapuso romance fantasy series, The Lost Recipe. Take a look at some of the significant (and picturesque) places featured in the hit series:
