prevent darkening of the lips

How come you have dark lips even if you don't smoke? 'Pinoy MD' dermatologist Dr. Jean Marquez explains.

Have you ever looked at yourself in the mirror one time and observed that you have dark lips?

You argue with yourself: you don't smoke, you live a pretty healthy lifestyle, and yet your lips are too dark for your complexion.

As it turns out, the darkening of the lips can be the result of hyperpigmentation caused by excess melanin.

According to Dr. Jean Marquez, FPDS in Pinoy MD, this darkening can be caused by several factors like excessive exposure to the sun, lack of hydration, allergic reaction to toothpaste, too much caffeine, and lip sucking.

She said, “Ang nakikita ko na isang sanhi nito is minsan masyadong matapang 'yung sabon na ginagamit nila.

“Since manipis 'yung skin natin dito sa lip area, mas mabilis siyang ma-irritate. And then, 'pag naarawan, mangingitim ito.”

Most of these causes can be addressed by certain lifestyle changes such as wearing sunscreen, limiting your caffeine intake, and changing toothpaste brands.

Dr. Jean adds, “Sometimes we recommend using a mild soap and meron din lip balm or lip moisturizer but with sunscreen.

“Kasi ang nangyayari, dahil exposed siya at manipis mas mabilis siyang nangingitim so we recommend to put sunblock on the area.”

If the above treatments don't work, one can also consider getting laser therapy as an effective treatment for lip hyperpigmentation.

Laser therapies can be helpful in getting rid of lip hyperpigmentation and reduce other problems such as peeling, cracking, and lip discomfort.

Dr. Jean explained, “Surprisingly, maraming ang nagpapagawa sa amin is mga lalaki.

“So, what we do is a series of pigment lasers at nagla-lighten siya eventually.

“Always, always tandaan niyo na pag nagpi-pigment laser kayo is to prevent sun exposure and always protect yourself from sun rays by wearing sunscreen.”

Getting pink lips is easy, but maintaining them is the hard part.

Stay hydrated, get your vitamins, and avoid bad habits to ensure you get great looking, impressive pink lips.

To protect them, apply lip balm regularly and very frequently to ensure all the moisture in your lips stay locked in.
